I'm not sure there ever was a case of "deficit spending" mike. I think it was more of a "the State has promised $XXX, so we can spend $XXX." When the State backed off that number, we found ourselves with a deficit in the budget. Now don't confuse that deficit with the debt that the District owes. That is a very real number that is already committed and spent and will need repayment.

It's a good start. I hope it doesn't end up being a case of robbing Peter to pay Paul though. At some point, like the article states, new textbooks will be needed, purchases will have to be made etc..

The Naperville River Walk and half of downtown flooded this week also. I doubt that people will be fleeing in droves. If development is done properly it can and will attract people, business and revenue to the downtown area. Doing nothing with the property is not a long term solution, no matter who is currently sitting on the Board.

But you are right in the low voter turnout. It is a poor reflection on the entire community.

    TotBS,
True, you may not call it evil, but you refer to it as an intrusion.
How is the fact that the state owns and maintains a highway, or the Park District that owns and maintains a trail, an "intrusion" into my running?
If they sent me a letter and said I could no longer run on the road because I was too old, or too slow or some such thing, then I might agree that it would be an intrusion. And just because they "could" do it, doesn't mean they ever would.
I prefer to live life day to day and worry about the things that affect me directly. Like this rain today. I'm glad the "government" is there to deal with the public safety issues. I'll bet there are a few individuals(perhaps even some conservative ones) that were glad the local authorities were able to rescue them from their stranded, swamped vehicles.
I guess we will have to agree to disagree on the just how much "intrusion" the government plays in each of our daily lives.

    TofBS,
We must have been raised in different era's or locations. When I was in school in the 60's and 70's, on the East coast, there were always school counselors.
It was indeed a lot different back then as far as resources available and the consequences of our actions. I will state that a lot of my actions, along with some friends, were not a lot different than those I read about today.
Driving recklessly, alcohol, smoking etc. It just wasn't made as public back then. I think we got away with a lot more.
That all being said, those days are long gone and we have to accept the world as we see it now and do, as you said, try our best to raise our kids the best we can. If that means that I might learn something from someone such as this blogger, then good for me, and my kids.
it doesn't automatically mean that I abdicate all parental responsibility and just do as the talking heads dictate. There is still room for personal thought.

    McCloud,
Where do you see the promotion in this blog? She is a school social worker, not in some fancy private practice, as far as I can tell.
Just wondering how you read that into the blog.

    TotBS and SeanG,
I admitted in my post that I thought the Gov takes a wee too much from me in the form of taxes. Calling that an "intrusion" is off the mark in my opinion.
I would hardly call the fees involved for the police dept (road safety) ambulance services etc in a large organized event such as a major marathon a government heavy hand. I think that might be stretching it a bit far.
And the majority of the places I run, as in the many, many miles of training to complete each official marathon, are on local streets and pathways. No government interference there either, I'm afraid.
I guess we just don't see the evil lurking behind EVERY door the same way.

    Here's one TofBS -
As I mentioned above - I like to run a marathon. The government hasn't said I can't run, they don't tell me how to run one, or which shoes to wear or how to train etc. Nada, zip, zilch.
they do take a few more dollars out of my paycheck that I would rather use for running trips, supplies etc...

Here's one for you Sean - It's not 120 years ago and the news cycle is everywhere 24/7. You can't shield your kids from it. They will hear the stories from one source or another. Not all kids are as you describe. For instance, my kids heard about this tragedy and they didn't automatically assume that they were in danger and their world was going to collapse. But they were concerned about me, because I happen to run marathons and they want to be sure that I'm not going to be hurt.
Your other points about the general worries of children are fairly accurate, but your rants about the government intrusion into our lives "might" be a little OTT.

    TotBS,
How did your parents handle this sort of thing when you were young?
Where did they get their information in regards to how best to deal with you and your questions? Do you know for a fact that they didn't reach out to someone; a neighbor, co-worker, pastor etc for some guidance or wisdom?
it just so happens that in this day and age, there are a lot more resources available to the average Joe. And not all of them are "big brother" reaching out to steal a chunk of your brain.
