With a fiscal cliff looming, the Department of Employment Security said last month that a solution was necessary to help improve jobless rates.
Unemployment rates in Illinois dropped slightly from October 2012 to November, to 8.2 percent, and are a full percentage point compared to 2011, according to new figures released last week. November local unemployment rates fell in 11 of 12 metro areas compared to last year, according to data released by the U.S. Department of Labor and the Illinois Department of Employment Security. Kendall County overall saw a decrease of 0.9 percent from November 2011 to November 2012 to 7.0 percent. With the clock ticking, Congress voted 257-167 to pass a Senate bill to stop the country from going over the so-called "fiscal cliff." On Tuesday, members of the House of Representatives from Illinois voted 14-4 in favor of the bill. For Republican Judy Biggert, who was defeated in November by Bill Foster in November, her vote in favor of the bill was her last as a member of the House of Representatives. Adam Kinzinger, R-Manteno, joined Biggert in voting yes, along with Dan Lipinski, D-Western Springs. Four House Republicans from Illinois voted no: Randy Hultgren (Winfield), Peter Roskam (Wheaton), Bobby Schilling (Colona) and Joe Walsh (McHenry). Republican cites failure to address spending as reason for opposition.
Although the U.S. House of Representatives overwhelmingly supported a Senate-backed bill to avert the so-called "fiscal cliff," Rep. Randy Hultgren, who represents Yorkville and Kendall County, opposed the legislation. Hultgren, a Republican, said he did not support the bill that raised income taxes on high-earning Americans, because it did not address spending cuts. The MoveOn political action group plans a "Tax the Wealthy" event at 10 a.m. Monday at 14th District Congressman Randy Hultgren's Geneva office at 1797 W. State St.
A political action group is planning to picket Monday in Geneva as part of 162 "Fiscal Showdown" events nationwide asking legislators "to vote to raise taxes on the wealthy to fix the deficit." MoveOn.org, one of the largest political action committees in the country, is making a local lobbying effort at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 10, at the Geneva office of Republican 14th District Congressman Randy Hultgren. I really don't see what is the big fuss about the fiscal cliff. The 660 billion that the tax increases were supposed to generate over the next ten years has already been used for the defense budget for one year.And as far as the upcoming budget talks begin the republicans are not going to do anything until all the tax shelters stay in place for their wealthy supporters and they get to reduce … more ›
