National economy, local races help bring voters to the polls. Turnout just misses 2008 numbers.
Yorkville and Kendall County voters turned out by the thousands to cast their ballots on Tuesday – and all for a myriad of reasons. In a discussion on the Yorkville Patch Facebook page several residents laid out their primary reasons for going to the polls, which, not surprisingly, included interests in the national economy as well as local issues. Barb Murphy and Dominique Castillo said they voted not only because of issues, but also because they regard it as a civic duty. “I also voted because I am blessed with that right. There are people in other countries who would die for that right,” Castillo said. Perennial candidate wins race for 25th State Senate seat.
Jim Oberweis has finally won his seat in Springfield. The Republican outpaced Democrat Corinne Pierog Tuesday night by a total of outpaced 51,282 to Pierog's 37,802. Oberweis won yet another GOP primary this March to take on Democrat Pierog for the 25th District State Senate seat. The campaign was far from his first: Oberweis, chairman of Oberweis Dairy, has made tries for the U.S. Senate and House, as well as running for governor. This time around, he was endorsed by the Chicago Tribune, despite the paper's vocal criticism of him in the past. On Tuesday you voted. Now, the results are in. There were plenty of hard-fought races throughout Kendall County, from Clerk and Coroner to several district board positions. Incumbent Becky Morganegg, Republican, beat Democratic challenger Danae Iacovella with a 61.32 percent to 38.68 percent tally, according to unoffical vote totals. Morganegg had 25,937 votes total, with 21,209 cast on election day and 4,728 cast in early voting. Iacovella had a total of 16,364 votes with 12,801 cast on election day and 3,563 during early voting. The Aurora Election Commission, with only three precincts, gave Morganegg a number of 752 and Iacovella 741. …

Aurora alderman defeats Fee in tough race.
Democratic Aurora Alderman Stephanie Kifowit will take her seat in Springfield, winning her race against Republican Pat Fee Tuesday night. In unofficial totals, Kifowit received 16,544 votes to Fee's 9,648. The race to represent the 84th State House District was heated at times, with Kifowit — a Democrat, substitute teacher, Aurora alderman and Marine Corps veteran — accusing her Republican opponent of employing dirty tactics and going on the attack early on in the campaign. For her part, Fee, a homemaker and community volunteer, denied what she called "absurd" allegations, which accused her of allowing campaign staffers to harass Kifowit and her family in person and online. In the days when House Speaker Dennis Hastert roamed the Earth, Illinois' 14th Congressional District was a guaranteed red-state Republican romp. The Will County Regional Superintendent of Schools, a Democrat, is projected winner over Garrett Peck.
Republican Garrett Peck lost to Democrat Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant Tuesday night, winning a projected total of 37,439 votes to her 41,766 votes in Will and Kendall counties. Bertino-Tarrant won with 53 percent of the vote. The race to represent the new 49th State Senate District saw veteran educator Bertino-Tarrant, a Democrat and the current Will County Regional Superintendent of Schools, take on Republican Peck, a Village of Plainfield trustee and small business owner. Naperville scientist Foster wins 11th District seat in bid to return to Congress.
Seven-term Congresswoman Judy Biggert was unseated by Democrat Bill Foster Tuesday night, with Foster snagging 58 percent of the vote with 92 precincts reporting. Around 10 p.m., Biggert conceded, saying she had called to congratulate her opponent. "It has been a long and hard-fought race, but tonight the voters have spoken," she said.
