Montgomery Gives Thanks: Readers Share the Reasons They're Thankful This Year

Share your gratitude with your friends and neighbors on this day of thanks.

Thanksgiving. A holiday steeped in American tradition. A day not only to test the limits of what should and should not be deep fried in a vat of boiling oil, but to also give thanks. At Patch, we’re most thankful for our readers and the communities we serve. Without you there would be no Patch, and we’re truly grateful for the opportunity to serve you.  But we want to know what you’re most thankful for this Thanksgiving. We asked our Facebook friends last week the same question and below are some of their responses. We’d like to hear from you, too. So, please leave your thoughts of gratitude in the comments section below.  Here is what some Patch Facebook followers are thankful for: Pat L. Husband is still working, a roof over our heads …

Vote for Your Favorite Thanksgiving Day Food

Thanksgiving Day is upon us. What is your favorite food on the dinner table?

Thanksgiving Day has been celebrated for centuries here in America. The holiday dates back to 1621 when the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared a harvest feast that has long been acknowledged as the first Thanksgiving. In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln declared a national Thanksgiving Day to be held each November.  The first Thanksgiving meal included wild turkey, waterfowl, venison, fish, lobster, clams, berries, fruit, pumpkin and squash. Some of those foods continue to be Thanksgiving staples, but over time, the meal has evolved.  So tell us, Patch readers, what is your favorite part of Thanksgiving dinner? Cast your vote in the poll below!

Tips to Keep Spending Under Control This Holiday Season

Charter One Bank, with ATM machines in area Speedway locations, offers the following tips.

This year, if you want to take advantage of the Black Friday deals, you don't even have to get up early on Friday morning. You can just have one or two extra slices of pumkin pie and head out to area retailers just after midnight.  Heck, Wal-Mart is opening its doors at 8 p.m. on Thursday for the shoppers who just can't take another minute of Aunt Martha. For a list of more stores opening early, click here. But, all those great deals can still have a terrible effect on household budgets. So, the folks at Charter One Bank, who have ATMs in area Speedway locations, including 4032 Us Highway 34., put together the following tips: Build a budget – To manage your holiday spending, an important first step is to create a realistic budget that will…

Community Steps Up to Aid Area Food Pantries

Demand at both the Kendall County and Aurora Interfaith food pantries is increasing, but so is community support this holiday season.

While the need in the Fox Valley area is great this holiday season, so is the generosity of the community, who has stepped up with both food and monetary donations. Kendall County Food Pantry in Yorkville has seen its usage increase by 300 percent in the last two years, and pantry officials expect the percentage to stay the same, if not grow, next year. “We’re hoping we’re wrong and those numbers are very inflated, but I’m afraid they aren’t,” said Judy Pacheco, executive assistant for the pantry. She attributes some of the increase to the economy’s woes. “People are losing their jobs, or are underemployed, or their hours have been cut,” Pacheco said. For the Thanksgiving holiday, the Kendall County Food Pantry will be giving turkeys to …
