Heaviest Snow to Hit Chicago Between 5 and 9 p.m.

Two to six inches likely across Chicagoland area.

Update 1:40 p.m. Thursday Although no snow has fallen yet, Public Works Director Jerry Weaver said public works staff is monitoring the area and has trucks "ready to roll" should they be needed. He said the biggest concerns in the area is the threat of icing due to the dropping temperatures and the wind gusts, which may get up to 50 mph here. Original story Snow boots? Check. Snow shovel? Rain, Wind, Thundersnow -- Thursday Promising to Be a Wild Weather Day

National Weather Service forecasters say snow accumulation could reach two to six inches, with wind causing occasional white-out conditions.

It will start with occasional rain and temperatures reaching 45 by 11 a.m., according to the forecast for this area by the National Weather Service, based in Romeoville. By late afternoon, though, temps will be plummeting to 35 and a stong wind from the northwest -- with gusts ranging from 25 to 60 mph -- will kick in, forecasters say. Snow accumulation could reach two to six inches, with heavier snow occurring overnight. Temps will fall even further, down to about 23 by Friday morning, the forecast says.
