Age is just a number. And twelve-year-old Madeline Cumbey is proving that you can help improve your community no matter your age. Cumbey moved to Oswego less than a year ago and has already started to make positive changes in the area. Cumbey spearheaded the creation of a community garden at Montgomery’s Community Christian Church (CCC). All produce is donated to the Kendall County Food Pantry to help those in need have nutritious food options. The garden was planted by community children as part of Oswegoland Park District’s Earth Day event in April 2012. Church members tend the garden and deliver the produce to the food pantry. Cumbey earned a $1,000 grant from Youth Service America which was used to purchase materials to build a …

Opening will be celebrated with coffee and doughnut holes at 9:30 a.m.
Oswego has plenty of parks and playgrounds for children to enjoy. At 9:30 a.m. Friday, a new play space joins the mix. The Oswegoland Park District announced the opening of the Boulder Point Playground at Boulder Point, located at Zero Boulder Hill Pass. The opening, said Special Events Supervisor Kristie Vest, will be a “celebration of creative design for area kids.” Once part of a parking lot, the new playground features poured-in-place rubberized surfacing, and is the District’s fifth handicapped accessible park. Trees were also planted to provide shade. “It has been years in the works and we are thrilled to celebrate it is open and ready for games of you-can’t-catch-me,” said Vest. The Oswegoland Park District will have coffee and …

Park Board gets recap of this summer’s PrairieFest
The 24th annual PrairieFest celebration held over three days in June saw a profit and revenue increase from last year. In a report to Park Board Commisisoners, Special Events Supervisor Kristie Vest said the 2013 PrairieFest saw revenue increase $2,681 from last year. The late start of the festival on Friday did impact revenue, particularly in beverage sales. Vest wrote that due to the weather conditions of the weekend – 100 plus temperatures and a forecast of afternoon rain – they were unable to recoup that loss. However, by increasing their Title Sponsors by one and doubling the Millennium Sponsors to six the Park District was able to make up for the shortfall in carnival and beverage sales. Sponsorship revenue in 2012 increased by $10,…

Mark Luttrell and Allison Darby were the overall male and female winners.
Have you ever wanted to attempt a triathlon, but weren’t sure you’d be able to make it through all three events? Enter the Oswegoland Park District’s 27th annual ‘I Tried a Triathlon’ event held every summer. Kristie Vest, Special Events Coordinator at the park district, said the event begins at the civic center pool where athletes complete a 250 yard swim and then go through the Boulder Hill neighborhood in a 6.5 mile bike race and finish with a 2.1 mile run. You don’t have to be an athlete to participate, as Vest said she saw everything from moms from minivans climbing onto their bikes, dads who swam 10 laps, and the Average Joes and Janes leaving their desks to try something new. “The Olympics has us all waxing nostalgic for days when …

The Kid’s Summer Garage Sale, organized by the Oswegoland Park District, gives kids the chance to sell toys and other things they've outgrown.
Kids looking to score a deal on toys and games will surely find one Friday. Back again is the Kid’s Summer Garage Sale event, organized by the Oswegoland Park District, which allows children ages 7-12 to sell old toys and other items for profit. This year’s sale is set for noon to 3 p.m. Friday, at the Civic Center in Boulder Hill. About 20 children are participating as sellers, said Cheryl Keilson, superintendent of early childhood at Oswegoland Park District. And they’ll be selling a variety of items. “We have toys, books, video games, decorative items for a child’s room, board games, etc.,” Keilson said. She said families from all over the Fox Valley take advantage of the garage sale. “Some come to shop for the bargains and others come …

Rich Zielke had been working as the interim executive director since April.
The Oswegoland Park District Board unanimously approved Monday afternoon the hiring of former deputy director Rich Zielke as the district’s new executive director. Zielke had been acting as interim executive director since the departure of Bill McAdam in April. McAdam took the position of executive director at the Downers Grove Park District. “It’s an honor to be considered for and appointed to this position,” Zielke said at a special meeting called Monday for the sole purpose of promoting him. “I look forward to continuing working with the tremendous staff and leading the district on its path that (the board) has set for us.” Zielke is the fourth executive director in the history of the park district, which was founded in 1950. The five Oswegoland Park Board members took a tour of the Fox Valley Special Recreation Association's headquarters in Aurora on Thursday. The OPD has been a member of the association since 2004.
The Oswegoland Park District has been a member of the Fox Valley Special Recreation Association for eight years. On Wednesday, the five Park Board commissioners got to see first hand just what the FVSRA does. And they came away impressed. The Park Board convened a special meeting on Wednesday to tour the FVSRA headquarters, located in the Vaughan Athletic Center in Aurora. There they heard from Executive Director Carolyn Nagle, but more importantly, they got to see the interaction FVSRA staff has with those using its services. They watched as Laurie Schaefer reached the members of the STARS (Structurized Therapeutic Adult Recreation Services) program through music. The program works with adults with mental and physical disabilities, …
