District 308 Contract Negotiations Set to Continue Dec. 11

The Oswego Education Association will offer a counter proposal at the meeting.

The Oswego 308 School Board and the Oswego Education Association (OEA) will meet Tuesday, Dec. 11, to continue to discuss contract negotiations. OEA president Darla Medernach said at that time the OEA will present a counter proposal, as requested by the school board. The OEA opted not to put the board’s previous proposal to a vote by their membership back on Nov. 16. Want free local news in your inbox every morning? Sign up for our newsletter. The board’s proposal included a .5 percent, 1 percent and 1.5 percent increase over three years on a three-year contract for all teachers with lane increases but no salary step increases. The reason that a bird with its head buried in the sand is used for a cop out is because it is very discriptive. Even with its head in the sand, life goes on, progress happens, things change, towns grow. Oswego has gone from a sleepy little village to a pretty big town in the 40+ years I have lived here. I've seen the growth. In the process of growing, I've been able to meet some real quality …   more ›

Available Classroom Space Becomes a Potential Problem for Growing District 308

Some classrooms in the district have over 30 students.

At the Monday night board meeting, Superintendent Matthew Wendt brought to attention the variety of numbers across the district in terms of students in classes. I'm not sure that anyone will read this because I'm joining the conversation late. Jim I'm not sure that you have a point if you are coming from such an uninformed position. The state of Illinois is currently the worst in funding for special needs in the United States and when my special needs child was born 12 years ago the state was in the mid 40's. Yes, that's correct we are behind Mississippi…   more ›

School Board Calls Special Meeting on Radon Levels at Boulder Hill Elementary

The Oswego School District has paid for three tests on the Boulder Hill school, with three different results, some showing high levels of cancer-causing radon. The board may call for further action at Thursday's special meeting.

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that has been named the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, after smoking. It is colorless, odorless and tasteless, and the only way to know it’s there is to test for it. So when staff at Boulder Hill Elementary School came to the Oswego School District with concerns about radon levels there, that’s exactly what district officials did. And the results of those tests have Oswego School Board members concerned enough that they have called a special meeting for Thursday to determine their next move. According to Kristine Liptrot, the district’s director of communications, at least two employees at Boulder Hill Elementary have contracted some form of cancer. Staff there asked…

The state of Illinois radon program licenses radon contractors. I have not located Wight & Co on the state website listing Commercial radon providers. Did a state licensed radon professional perform the radon testing for Wight & Co? If not their report may not be valid. Radon Detection Specialists of Burr Ridge is a respected commercial and residential radon testing contractor and are listed on …   more ›
