Many of you are so misinformed but quick to criticize. All teachers pay into their retirement and none have been informed yet on the details of the new contract proposed.   more ›

The Oswego Education Association will offer a counter proposal at the meeting.

The Oswego 308 School Board and the Oswego Education Association (OEA) will meet Tuesday, Dec. 11, to continue to discuss contract negotiations. OEA president Darla Medernach said at that time the OEA will present a counter proposal, as requested by the school board. The OEA opted not to put the board’s previous proposal to a vote by their membership back on Nov. 16. Want free local news in your inbox every morning? Sign up for our newsletter. The board’s proposal included a .5 percent, 1 percent and 1.5 percent increase over three years on a three-year contract for all teachers with lane increases but no salary step increases. The reason that a bird with its head buried in the sand is used for a cop out is because it is very discriptive. Even with its head in the sand, life goes on, progress happens, things change, towns grow. Oswego has gone from a sleepy little village to a pretty big town in the 40+ years I have lived here. I've seen the growth. In the process of growing, I've been able to meet some real quality …   more ›

District 308 Makes Contract Proposal to Teacher's Union, Union Decides Not to Vote on Proposal

The Oswego Education Association union has been without a contract since June. At issue in negotiations are the length of the high school teacher work day and teachers' salaries throughout the district.

The Oswego District 308 School Board and the Oswego Education Association (OEA) union continue to negotiate a new contract, with working hours for high school teachers and salaries the two main sticking points.  Teachers have been working without a contract since June 30, and the School Board heard a negotiations update from its attorney, Maureen Lemon and their Monday night meeting. The District submitted its most recent proposal Nov. 8 and requested the proposal be presented to the entire OEA. The OEA’s bargaining team indicated they needed to have their executive committee review the proposal before deciding whether to submit it to their membership for a vote. As of late Thursday evening, OEA president Darla Medernach said the OEA had …

Olivia..yes that's right. I wasn't sure. The point I was making though is that you don't necessarily need an education degree to be a teacher. From http://www.isbe.state.il.us/certification/html/becoming_teacher.htm " Individuals who already hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university and have related work experience may be interested in one of Illinois’ Alternate …   more ›

District 308 Teachers, Staff, Administrators Receive Raises

Increases in line with Consumer Price Index.

Teachers and support staff in Oswego Community Unit School District 308 will receive raises after the school board unanimously approved contracts Monday night with the unions that represent those workers. The teachers' union, Oswego Education Association, and the board agreed to a 2.1 percent salary increase for the 2011-12 school year. The 2.1 percent is based upon a blended Consumer Price Index from July through December 2011 combined with the CPI from January through June 2012, according to a district news release. The contract will expire June 30, 2012. A one-year deal was necessary because a more complex negotiation will take place next year as the high schools move to the new eight-period schedule. “Throughout the negotiation process…
