Douglas D. Baker — an award-winning professor of business, proven high-level administrator and scholar of management and leadership in higher education —has been named the 12th president of Northern Illinois University. NIU’s Board of Trustees voted Tuesday, April 2, to hire the 57-year-old Baker, whose appointment will be effective July 1. He currently serves as provost and executive vice president at the University of Idaho. The Northern Illinois University Convocation Center in DeKalb seats 10,000, and has parking for 3,000 cars.
Students in both Oswego high schools will have to drive a little farther to get to graduation next year, but they’ll be able to invite more of their family and friends to attend. On Monday, the District 308 board unanimously chose the convocation center at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb as the site of the 2013 graduation. The convocation center seats 10,000 and has parking for 3,000 cars, offering a sizeable increase over the high schools themselves, where graduations have traditionally been held. The total cost of renting NIU's center would be $11,674, which includes labor costs, online streaming of the ceremony, and production of tickets. UPDATED with Trustee Andy Kaczmarek's comments. Though most of their meetings in June were canceled, due to a lack of pressing business, village trustees haven’t spent the whole month idle. This week, the six Village Board members participated in a two-day governance training session at Village Hall, conducted by professors at Northern Illinois University. The sessions cost a total of $4,000, and were designed to help the new board communicate with one another. Half the trustees weighed in on the experience on Wednesday.
