Park Board Appoints New Commissioner [Video]

Dave Krahn was appointed in the vacant space left after ex-commissioner Leonard Wass resigned from the board in December.

The Oswegoland Park Board appointed Dave Krahn as the new commissioner at their Thursday night meeting. Krahn takes over the spot left vacant by previous commissioner Leonard Wass, who left the board in December, who believed the board puts the taxpayer's interest last and was out of touch with community interests. Wass had over four years left of his six-year term, but Krahn will only remain as commissioner until the 2015 election, said board president Bob Mattingly. At that election the last two years of the seat will be placed on the ballot. “In spite of what some may think, an individual park board or commissioner does not have the authority to make these rules,” said Mattingly of the appointment procedures. Mattingly, reading from a …

Embattled Wass Leaves Park Board

Park Board commissioner says his resignation does not mean, "that the Park Board will be free to pursue its old wasteful spending ways without a watchdog in its house."

Effective immediately, Oswegoland Park Board commissioner Leonard Wass has handed in his resignation from the board. Wass cited issues he has with the board, namely that he believes the board puts the taxpayer's interest last and is out of touch with community interests. At November's meeting, Wass fought for a 20 percent tax levy reduction, citing examples of where cuts and possible profits could be made, again clashing with board members. Below is the full text of Wass' resignation that he delivered to the board on Thursday evening: Dear Editor:  It has been a great disappointment for me to be part of a board that puts the taxpayer’s interest last, and believes that a 20 year incumbency allows certain board members to do what ever they …

This county is all about the "good ole boy' system. Mr. Wass I appreciate you and your efforts. People evidently do not appreciate anyone being questioned. I can appreciate your peacefulness without this corrupt county breathing down your neck. Nobody wants to be questioned and many taxpayers support the "good ole boy" system. The more one digs the sadder the story. What the difference is that …   more ›

Park Board Commisioner’s Residency Questioned

Commissioner Leonard Wass’ primary residence is in doubt by fellow commissioners.

To have a seat on the Oswegoland Park District board, one’s primary residence must be within the boundaries of the district.  Park Board commissioners, who are often at odds with fellow Commissioner Len Wass, claim that Wass, elected to the Park Board in April 2011, does not consider Oswego his primary residence. At the Park Board meeting last week during the board's tax levy discussion, Wass was vocal for cutting the tax levy by 20 percent, while the rest of the board wanted the levy unchanged. During the conversation, Wass told the public gathered at the meeting, “They want me off the board so they don’t have to hear me stand up for you.” That remark sparked a discussion of Wass’ primary residence. Board President Bob Mattingly tried …

One reason the unincorporated areas are more expensive, is that they lack the bargaining power the city has when negotiating things like garbage and electric bills. While the residents pay these individually, the village has been able to get the prices down because of the collective buying power of all the residents. Individuals who aren't in the village have to deal with the disadvantage of no …   more ›

Park Board Passes Levy with 5 Percent Reduction From Previous Year

Commissioners hear from Kendall County Tax Revolt members before vote.

After intense public commentary and discussion between commissioners, the Oswegoland Park District Board voted to approve this year’s tax levy with a reduction of 5 percent from last year. Prior to the tax levy discussion, several community members spoke in support of a Kendall County non-binding 20 percent levy reduction that 71 percent of voters approved Election Day. Jan Alexander, a member of the  Kendall County Property Tax Revolt, said she wanted the park board to take the cuts seriously. “Your services don’t save lives,” she said. “We want some cuts.” Oswego resident Richard Ayers added that the “board doesn’t have proper respect for citizens.” Another resident,, Dave Peterson, said he felt the park district wasn’t a luxury and that…

Russ voted for 20%, hoping for 5% and got it. I don't believe there is 20% of waste at the park district, and I have not seen it identified.   more ›
