The rules that govern athletes and those participating in extracurricular activities may be overhauled, if board members can agree on the changes.
The Oswego School Board is planning to update and revise the code of conduct for athletes and those involved in extracurricular activities. But based on discussions at last week’s board meeting, it’s unclear just what form those revisions will take. At last Monday’s meeting, board members Mike Scaramuzzi and Laurie Pasteris unveiled the current draft of the code, which covers every student involved in sports, drama or other school-sponsored activities. Scaramuzzi and Pasteris have been involved in discussions over the code for months, and even they disagreed on some of the proposed changes. Long Beach Elementary parent Mary Zarembski says it's time for new leadership.
Parents in Oswego School District 308 have started an online petition calling for three members of the school board to relinquish their leadership positions. The petition, started by Mary Zarembski, calls for Board President Bill Walsh, Vice President Alison Swanson and Secretary Laurie Pasteris to step aside because of what Zarembski said has been 12 months of ineffective leadership, lack of transparency and an inability to communicate with the public. The petition also calls for more senior members of the board to fill those leadership roles. Murphy Junior High should ease overcrowding at Bednarcik and Traughber junior highs.
The Oswego District 308 School Board voted Monday night to open Murphy Junior High School in Plainfield for the 2012-13 school year. Board members Laurie Pasteris, Alison Swanson and Bill Walsh voted no after hearing from parents, students and members of the district’s boundary committee in about an hour of public comment. Lisa Udy, a parent and boundary committee member, approached the board early in the hour, saying that if the district has money to spend on optional programs such as industrial arts at the junior highs and Dual Language, it should have the money to ease overcrowding. @Car...while I'm about 30 years past my senior year in HS what I can tell you is 30-34 years ago we drank, we partied on weekends, we thought many of our deans were a joke too so what you say is nothing new, even though many parents like to think it is, we seem to have selective amnesia and forgot about it.
