UPDATED: Traffic to Switch to New Lanes on Orchard Today and Tomorrow

The Kane County Division of Transportation will move traffic to the newly constructed lanes on Orchard Road today, signaling the final stage of the first half of the widening project.

UPDATE: Work is now scheduled to begin around 11 a.m. today, with all traffic switched over by tomorrow afternoon. For months, crews have been constructing new concrete lanes on Orchard Road in Montgomery. Today, they’ll be put to use. Officials at the Kane County Division of Transportation have announced that traffic will be moved onto the new lanes today, signaling that the first half of the Orchard Road widening project is winding down. The two new lanes will be for southbound traffic once the entire project is complete, but officials say they will use one for northbound and one for southbound traffic starting today. According to village officials, the switchover is expected to begin around 7 a.m., with southbound traffic on the new …

Orchard Road Concrete Work to Begin Tuesday

The Kane County Division of Transportation suggests finding an alternate route during the heavy work, which should take two to three weeks to complete.

Update: This work is now set to begin tomorrow, Nov. 1, at 7 a.m. The headline and story have been changed. If you drive Orchard Road through Montgomery, you’re going to want to find another route for the next few weeks. The first phase of the Orchard Road widening project is coming to a head, with concrete pavement and curb and gutter work beginning on the southbound lanes on Nov. 1, according to the Kane County Division of Transportation. The road will not be blocked off, and the traffic pattern will stay the same, but about 500 semi truck loads of concrete will be moved in and dumped out, so flaggers will need to stop traffic much more frequently, according to KDOT. The process is expected to take two to three weeks to complete. The …

Village, County to Partner on Long-Term Montgomery Road Fix

Village trustees gave the go-ahead to a plan that will see Montgomery Road widened and repaired, and then turned over to the village.

For years, Montgomery Road has needed some serious work. Now, Kane County has devised both a short-term and a long-term solution. Montgomery Road, which snakes through the east side of town, belongs to the county. According to Montgomery’s village engineer, Pete Wallers, the road sees standing water whenever it rains, water which doesn’t drain off. And according to Carl Schoedel, director of the Kane County Division of Transportation, that standing water has weakened the pavement in several areas along the road. Schoedel said Kane County plans to resurface Montgomery Road next year, and fix some of the drainage issues at the same time. But both Schoedel and Wallers agree that a resurfacing will not fix the problems. In order to do that, …

Work Starts on Orchard Road, Open House Scheduled to Help Drivers

The widening project, more than 10 years in the making, got rolling this week. Officials have scheduled an open house for July 28 to talk about traffic concerns during the year-long construction.

It’s really happening. Work officially began this week on the long-awaited widening of Orchard Road through Montgomery. When it’s finished, the bottleneck between Jericho Road and Route 30 will be gone, replaced with brand-new four-lane road. The Kane County Division of Transportation is heading up the project, using federal and state funds. The project was initially expected to cost north of $18 million, but the still-faltering economy led to 12 hungry contractors bidding for the job. The contract, which the Illinois Department of Transportation awarded last month, went to Plote Construction Inc. of Hoffman Estates, who will do the work for $9.2 million. The widening is expected to be completed by summer of next year. Once it’s done, …

Orchard Road Widening to Begin in July

State legislators unanimously approved the capital projects bill in a special session Wednesday, clearing the last hurdle from the long-gestating widening project.

The Orchard Road widening project is a go. In a brief afternoon special session on Wednesday, state lawmakers unanimously approved a $33.2 billion capital projects bill, stripped of the controversial $430 million in additional spending tacked on by the state Senate last month. The bill, essentially the same one passed by legislators in 2009 and struck down by state courts in January, includes funding for road and bridge projects all across the state. Most immediately for the local area, the bill will help fund the $9.3 million widening of Orchard Road to four lanes between Jericho Road and Route 30. That project, in the works for a decade, is set to begin shortly after July 4, and wrap up before next summer. Two lanes will be before the …

Yay!!! I can't wait for Orchard to be done! As for getting "hosed" by contractors, consider that many businesses have had to cut wayyyyy back on staff and other expenses over the last few years so may be more able to cut their prices now. Businesses are doing what they have to do to stay in business. I don't know anything about this particular bid/project, but I'm just glad it's getting done.   more ›

State Capital Bill Last Hurdle for Orchard Road Widening

Legislators expected to pass a capital projects bill Wednesday; work could begin next month at fraction of expected cost.

If all the stars align, the Orchard Road widening project could begin shortly after July 4—and for significantly less money than expected. The Kane County Division of Transportation is set to widen Orchard from two lanes to four, roughly between Jericho Road in Aurora and Route 30 in Montgomery. That area of road sees an average of 35,000 cars daily, according to KDOT’s most recent figures, and that section is the only place where Orchard collapses to two lanes. According to KDOT project manager Paul Holcomb, the cost of the project was originally estimated at $18.5 million. The results of the bid process were a sign of the still-faltering economy: the county received 12 bids, and the lowest, from Plote Construction, came in at $9.3 …

While I'm glad this is close to getting done, I have to wonder about the cost. They budgeted over $18MM and the lowest bid comes in at $9.3MM????? It seems to me that the taxpayers have probably been taken for a ride by the politicians and construction companies in the past and only now when work is scarce and available funds are low do they actually bid at an appropriate price because they are …   more ›
