State Sen. Chris Lauzen easily defeats Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns in the race for the Republican nomination for Kane County Board chairman.
The donnybrook primary campaign between a state senator and a Kane County mayor is over. With all precincts reporting, state Sen. Chris Lauzen on Tuesday won the GOP nomination for Kane County Board chairman with about 70 percent of the vote. The unofficial totals had 25,953 ballots cast for Lauzen over 11,424 for Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns. As expected, Lauzen did well in his Aurora stomping grounds, leading Burns 3,659 to 872. “Ladies and gentlemen, I don’t think this was supposed to happen, was it?" Democrats on the ballot for Kane County Board chairman are less than 24 hours away from Tuesday's primary in Illinois. In Kane County, the race that has perhaps drawn the most attention is one for chairman of the Kane County Board. On the Democrat ticket is Bill Sarto, a former Carpentersville president, and Sue Klinkhamer, who served as mayor of St. Charles before Don DeWitte. It's coming to the wire in what probably is the marquee event on the GOP March 20 horse race for Kane County Board chairman. State Sen. Chris Lauzen took the lead out of the gate, with name recognition and a formidable group of supporters, including his campaign committee chair, former state Sen. Steve Rauschenberger, and endorsements from Congressman Randy Hultgren and former U.S. Sen. Peter Fitzgerald. It's been a contentious primary campaign so far, and there are still many days left before the March 20 election. There has been a lot of back and forth during the race for the Republican nomination for Kane County Board chairman. The rhetoric has been intense, and each side has thrown its share of daggers. From red-light cameras, to city e-mails, to charges of misinformation, to attacks on each other's personal character, this has been a no-holds-barred battle. Who will win? The Kane County Board chairman GOP primary race continues to heat up, as Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns holds a press conference Tuesday, in which he accuses his opponent, state Sen. Chris Lauzen, of manipulating the facts.
Kevin Burns accused Chris Lauzen on Tuesday of "misrepresentation, misuse and misdirection" of facts that make Lauzen "profoundly unqualified to lead" Kane County. The Geneva mayor and Kane County Board chairman candidate held a press conference at noon Tuesday at his campaign headquarters, at 1950 S. Batavia Ave., just north of the Campana Building. The purpose, he said, was to "set the record straight" about statements Lauzen has made during the GOP primary race for County Board chairman. Dear Editor: As a lifelong resident of Kane County and a member of the Kane County Board, I have an admittedly biased opinion that Kane County is a great place to live, work and raise a family. I am also proud of our county and local government’s ability to maintain our high quality of life in Kane County. To that end, I am wholeheartedly endorsing Chris Lauzen for Kane County Board chairman. Chris is a model father, husband and citizen. As a longtime member of the state senate, Chris’s reputation for returning all calls and doggedly following up on his constituents issues is well known. Kane County Board chairman candidate Chris Lauzen underlined his opposition to red-light cameras Thursday afternoon and dotted the exclamation point with a flourish by making his statement under a red-light camera in his opponent's home town. Standing under a sign that read "Red Light Photo Enforced" at the intersection of Randall Road and Williamsburg Avenue in Geneva, Lauzen visually illustrated that his position on red-light cameras is very different than that of Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns.
