Montgomery Kids Squeezing More Out of Summer Lemonade Stand

An $18 Foxmoor windfall has turned into a full-scale garage sale fundraiser Saturday for the Down Syndrome Buddy Walk.

On Wednesday, the neighborhood kids in the Foxmoor subdivison ran an impromptu lemonade stand. Not so noteworthy, right? A few hours later, though, they decided to donate their $18 in proceeds and organize another, bigger, fundraiser. The 10 kids involved are ages 6 to 10 and attend either Kaneland McDole Elementary School or are starting at Kaneland Harter Middle School. Vikki Moeller wasn’t surprised when her son and his friends asked to set up a lemonade stand. She said they do this regularly and usually earn 50 cents for their efforts. This time, Moeller utilized Facebook to encourage her community, saying “there were eager kids outside and if they had a chance to come over and buy some lemonade.” Vikki credits the community for the …

Garage Sale Raises Hundreds for OHS Student's Surgery

Proceeds from the sale, arranged by Churchill Elementary School educators, will go to the family of Leah Pierson, who recently underwent surgery for severe scoliosis.

A garage sale at Oswego High School on Saturday raised $588 to help the family of Leah Pierson pay for her recent scoliosis surgery. Educators from Churchill Elementary School in Oswego organized the sale, which saw dozens of donations from local families. The money collected will go to the Pierson family, to help pay down bills from Leah’s surgery, which she underwent on June 20. Leah was born with severe scoliosis, a curvature of the spine that can eventually lead to significant health problems. According to Leah’s father, Todd Pierson, the family tried braces and back exercises when Leah, now 15, was younger, but the problem persisted. The surgery went well, Todd said, and involved inserting rods screwed to her vertebrae to straighten …

My heart goes out to Todds family. One more touching story why we need national health care. No child or parent should have to deal with this in the greatest county on earth?   more ›

Scenes from a Community Garage Sale

On Thursday, Montgomery's fall community garage sale kicked off, with 70 homes offering bargains and deals to all who pass by. The sale continued Friday, and wraps up on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Montgomery's fall community garage sale kicked off Thursday, with 70 homes around the village offering deals and bargains. From toys to collectibles to clothes, the driveways and yards of the village were full of things you may not have even realized you needed, things that would look perfect right there in your house. You know the spot. Right there. Participants in the fall garage sale had to pay $10, and that money will go toward the restoration of Settler's Cottage, in front of Village Hall on River Street. Official maps of the garage sales are available on the village website. The sale continued Friday, though the chilly weather kept some buyers away, and will wrap up on Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Five Reasons to Love September

The rest of this month is full of interesting events, from a 5K to fight child trafficking, to a chance to meet Sen. Mark Kirk.

The air is getting cooler, the days are getting shorter, and fall is almost upon us. There! That’s three reasons to love September already. What, you need more? Well, all right then. The back half of this month is full of enriching and enlightening activities. Here’s a look at five reasons September is one of the best months of the year. 1. Montgomery Community Garage Sale – Sept. 15-17. The village hosts two of these a year, and this is the second one. The summer sale, in June, saw about 75 homeowners sign up, and hundreds of people flocking to the neighborhoods looking for bargains. The sale will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and an official map showing the 70 homes offering items is available at Village Hall, and on the village website. …

Montgomery's Fall Community Garage Sale Set for Sept. 15-17

The deadline to sign up for the annual event is Sept. 1, and the $10 cost will go entirely to preserving Settler's Cottage.

If you’re hoping to be a part of next month’s community-wide garage sale—and help preserve a piece of village history—you’ve only got a couple days to sign up. The garage sales have been a Montgomery attraction for five years. Typically, the village organizes two sales a year—one in the summer, and one in the fall. The summer sale, in early June, saw about 75 homeowners sign up, and hundreds of people hit the streets looking for bargains. The fall sale this year is on Sept. 15, 16 and 17, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Those hosting sales can participate on any of these dates, or all of them. If you want to be included in the village’s official map of the sale, and in the ads the village will take out in community newspapers, you need to sign up by…

Garage Sales Galore in Montgomery This Weekend

The village's 5th annual Community Garage Sale kicks off Thursday. Here's a map of all the locations.

If you’re looking for a deal, Montgomery is the place to be this weekend. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., the village’s fifth annual community garage sale will essentially turn Montgomery into a bargain hunter’s paradise. A total of 71 homes will participate this year, on both sides of the Fox River. That’s down from the 125 garage sale sites last year, but it’s still plenty of treasure to pick through. With 25 of those homes east of Route 31 and the other 46 west of it, the sale covers plenty of ground as well. You’ll find the most homes participating in Lakewood Creek this year – 11 of them. Foxmoor is right behind with 10. Other west side subdivisions with garage sales include Fairfield Way, Lakewood Creek West…

If you want to join in, you need to fill out your entry form by May 27.

How would you like to get rid of some of your old stuff, and help preserve Settlers Cottage on River Street at the same time? You’ll have that chance next month, as Montgomery kicks off its fifth annual community garage sale. On June 9, 10 and 11, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., the village will turn into a massive market, and visitors will be able to get a guided tour of homes with bargains to peddle. A rain date of June 16-18 has been set as well. Last year, a total of 125 households participated in the garage sale, according to Debbie Buchanan, executive assistant to the village manager. The fee to join up this year is $10, and registration forms are available at Village Hall, 200 N. River Street, or online at the village website. But you’d …
