For all the economic indicators that are bandied about in the media each day, none of them are really understandable to an underprivileged child. Nor do they make a difference. To these young people whose families are struggling, they only know what they have. Or, more accurately, what they don’t have. The holidays can be a particularly tough time. While other children enjoy overflow celebrations and plentiful presents under the tree, the less fortunate raise a cup that’s half-empty. That reality has hit home with the Fox Valley Park District, among other local agencies, businesses and organizations. Once again, the Park District is serving as an active partner in local collection efforts to provide gifts for children as part of the …

No tax increase for second consecutive year.
Editor's note: The following is a press release from the Fox Valley Park District. Fox Valley Park District residents will benefit from another tax freeze after the District’s Board of Trustees approved a zero-percent increase for the second consecutive year. While the District was allowed to levy an increase up to 3.0 percent, Executive Director Nancy McCaul said “we are choosing not to levy for the full amount out of consideration for our residents and the financial challenges many of us may be facing in this recovering economy. “Our tax receipts will probably be less than last year, which will mean a reduction in tax revenue for the 2013-14 budget year,” said McCaul. The park district’s emphasis on excellence will not change, either. “…

Weekly musings from Jeff Long, public relations manager for the Fox Valley Park District.
The four-day respite that kicks off on Thanksgiving Day is always welcome, especially when it involves the celebration of family, friends and other things we cherish most, like food, football and naps. The holiday season has officially begun, as tomorrow’s Black Friday hysteria will evidence. This seasonal segue always happens quickly. No sooner do autumn leaves fall when the glittering lights of Christmas begin to multiply. Soon, neighborhoods and towns will be aglow in holiday spirit. For as magical as this transformation is, we’re four weeks behind Cori Buis, who’s been busily preparing Blackberry Farm with dazzling displays of holiday cheer. Next Saturday, it all comes to life as the Polar Express train takes to the track for the first…

Weekly musings from Jeff Long, public relations manager for the Fox Valley Park District.
The moment you pull that door open and enter the Vaughan Athletic Center, your world is transformed. The stress and distractions of everyday life – even your fatigue from the day – suddenly vanish, replaced by a rush of energy and adrenalin. This is a vibrant, healthy place where people feel good, a place always buzzing with activity amid three swimming pools, two running tracks, fitness machines, free weights, tennis courts and sports programs galore. Until now, all the action was confined inside this vast structure. That all changed last week with the grand opening of a beautifully designed, fully accessible outdoor playground – officially named Harmony Pointe – at the north end of the facility. Built on 19 acres of land, this area didn’…
