Waubonsie Valley Captures Third Straight Aurora Championship

The Waubonsie Valley boys golf team won the Aurora City Tournament for the third straight time on Wednesday at Phillips Park behind four players in the 70s.

Waubonsie Valley was a battle-hardened team the last two years with a state appearance in 2009. But some things have not changed much for the Warriors’ boys golf team. With four players shooting in the 70s Wednesday afternoon at Phillips Park, Waubonsie Valley won its third straight Aurora City Tournament with a 314 total. Metea Valley, which had the individual champion in Adam Kreimer, was 10 shots behind its fellow Indian Prairie school. Marmion was third, denying IMSA and Aurora Central Catholic by three combined strokes; West Aurora, Aurora Christian and East Aurora rounded out the eight-school tournament. Alec Koulos and Alex Meyer are the proven veterans for Waubonsie, but it is the progression of varsity newcomers Austin Datz and …

Mackey's 3 TDs Help Mustangs Run Over Tomcats

Metea now 3-0 after dominating visiting East Aurora 47-0.

The warnings came all week from the coaches. Don’t ever overlook an opponent. It appears as if the Metea Valley football players listened well. The Mustangs scored on their first pass attempt of the game and then on their run of the night on their way to a 41-0 halftime lead and a 47-0 defeat of visiting East Aurora in the conference opener for each school. Tre’Sean Mackey ran for three touchdowns and Jarrett House threw for three more — all in the first half — as the hosts looked sharp on both sides of the ball. “We challenged the kids all week to not let this be a trap game,” Mustangs coach Ted Monken said. “We knew East Aurora was struggling this year. We wanted to make sure we executed at a higher level and not make turnovers. We …

Hoops: These Boys are Flying High

Sports Writer Paul Johnson ranks the top five teams in the region, plus a short list of the next best teams.

1. Benet Academy (27-0): Benet is the talk of the nation after taking down the state’s No. 1 team, Simeon on Saturday. The Redwings soared to No. 6 in the USA Today poll and No. 1 in the Midwest. They’ll take their perfect record into the postseason next week at the Naperville North Regional. 2. Downers Grove South (23-3): The Mustangs quietly will ride into the postseason in Benet’s shadow, not having lost a game since Dec. 18. They’ll ride a 16-game win streak into the West Aurora Regional next week. 3. East Aurora (20-5): The Tomcats have won five straight after a three-game hiccup and still have a non-conference tune-up with Batavia Friday before starting their postseason journey. East Aurora headlines the Bolingbrook Regional next …

Hoops: These Boys are Flying High

Sports writer Paul Johnson ranks the region's top five boys basketball teams, plus a list of five knocking on the door.

1. Benet Academy (25-0): The game Illinois basketball fans have awaited for all season is finally here, the Redwings’ showdown with No. 1 Simeon Saturday at the UIC Pavilion. Simeon was knocking on the door of a No. 1 national ranking, but was knocked off by Whitney Young this week. Could a Benet win make it the state’s No. 1 team? 2. Downers Grove South (21-3): A 10-day layoff didn’t slow down the Mustangs against Leyden. Friday features a chance for DGS to wrap up the West Suburban Gold as the Mustangs host a tough Proviso East team. DGS beat the Pirates by 12 in January. 3. East Aurora (17-5): The Tomcats rebounded from three straight losses with three straight wins, including Neuqua Valley and cross-town rival West Aurora. They …

Girls Basketball: Neuqua Defense Suffocates East Aurora

Neuqua Valley 48, East Aurora 27. Wildcats' advance to the championship game of the Tomcats' Class 4A regional with a valiant defensive effort.

The Hot Read: The story of Neuqua Valley's 48-27 girls basketball victory over East Aurora was defense. The Wildcats limited the Tomcats to single-digit scoring outputs in all four quarters on Wednesday night in semifinal play at the Class 4A East Aurora Regional. The Wildcats’ suffocated the Tomcats with an aggressive 1-3-1 zone. The Tomcats were harassed into a 9-for-49 shooting performance. Neuqua extended its perimeter defense so effectively that the Tomcats were 1-of-15 from beyond the arc. East Aurora turned the ball over 24 times, and its woes were further exaggerated with nine missed free throws. Neuqua Valley led 25-16 at halftime. The Tomcats never came closer than nine points in the second half, and the Wildcats gradually …

On Cue: Pryor, Johnson Step to the Forefront

Unlikely heroes emerge in East's 74-66 boys basketball victory over West on Saturday night.

It is one of the true hallmarks of the East High-West High rivalry in Aurora. For the schools’ historic rivalry, the oldest in the state, there has been a decades-long penchant for the series to produce the most unlikeliest of heroes. Saturday night at East High before a frenzied crowd in excess of 4,00, Patrick Pryor and Dominique Johnson were the selected ones during the Tomcats’ thrilling 74-66 victory over their archrivals from the West Side. The history books will one day show Ryan Boatright torching his former middle school teammates for 41 points, or that Snoop Viser turned the tide with his four 3-pointers in collecting 16 points. But it was Johnson, the Tomcats’ defensive stopper, and Pryor, recently permitted to play after …

Boys Basketball: Boatright Scores 41; East Blitzes West with Second-Quarter Surge

East Aurora 74, West Aurora 66. East High senior standout Ryan Boatright poured in 41 points, and Snoop Viser added 16 as the Tomcats ended the Blackhawks' three-game win streak in storied city series.

The Hot Read: East Aurora torched arch-rival West Aurora for 26 points in the second quarter. The Tomcats built a 37-31 lead  at halftime they never relinquished in a 74-66 boys basketball victory witnessed by more than 4,000 fans at the Tomcats’ famed gymnasium Saturday night in Aurora. Snoop Viser hit consecutive 3-point field goals to jump-start the Tomcats’ offense, and standout guard Ryan Boatright did the rest. After losing all three games to West High during his career, the UConn-bound candidate for Illinois’ Mr. Basketball lit up the Blackhawks for 41 points, including 12 in the second quarter and 13 more in the decisive fourth quarter when West Aurora sliced its one-time 13-point third-quarter deficit to five on three occasions. …

Hoops: These Boys are Flying High

Sports writer Paul Johnson ranks the top five boys basketball teams in the region, plus a list of the five next best.

1. Benet Academy (24-0): The margins of victory keep getting smaller, but the wins keep coming for the Redwings. Last week’s wins clinched their second straight East Suburban Catholic championship. 2. Downers Grove South (20-3): The Mustangs continue to roll, overwhelming Willowbrook and Downers Grove North to make it 13 straight wins. DGS gave up only 46 combined points in the two wins. 3. Neuqua Valley (20-4): The Wildcats recovered from a mid-season lull to win four of their last five games. Avenging their first loss of the year at East Aurora Thursday would give them a great shot at winning the Upstate Eight Valley title. 4. East Aurora (16-5): The Tomcats join the region with this week’s launch of the Montgomery site. UConn-bound Ryan…

East Aurora's Viser Second to None on Perimeter

Latrell 'Snoop' Viser gives Tomcats a 3-point threat, takes some of the load off celebrated backcourt mate Ryan Boatright.

Ryan Boatright has been the face of the East Aurora boys basketball program ever since he elicited national news before playing in his first game for the Tomcats. But the 'Cats are far from a one-man operation. Connecticut-bound Boatright is a leading contender for Illinois’ Mr. Basketball after two eye-popping performances, but the electric point guard has an able backcourt mate in Latrell “Snoop” Viser. “I do think (Viser) gets overshadowed by Boatright,” said Woodridge-based talent evaluator Roy Schmidt. “He is a good 3-point shooter, but he can score in a variety of ways. In my opinion, that’s the strongest asset to his game.” Viser began his prep career at Oswego East, but the off-guard transferred to East Aurora after his sophomore …

East Aurora's 'Boat' Sails at Head of the Fleet

Ryan Boatright carries on Tomcats' illustrious backcourt tradition.

He is simply the latest in a storied galaxy of backcourt players to come out of  East Aurora High School. From the late 1960s until the present day, few, if any, boys basketball programs in the state can match East Aurora for producing electrifying guards. “It’s what the program is known for,” said Skip Ulrich, a 1968 graduate of East High who is the Aurora West High sophomore boys basketball coach. “Historically, they just haven’t had the bigs.” When flamboyant coach Ernie Kivisto came to East Aurora in the fall of 1967, his boys, Bob and Tom, quickly emerged as mainstays in the Tomcats' program. Bob was a senior, Tom a sophomore. Tom Kivisto set the school single-game scoring record in 1970 with 56 points. Despite prolific scoring guards…
