Follow These Tips to Stay Safe on Cyber Monday

Ray Klump, a Lewis University professor and computer expert, offers these tips to avoid problems while online shopping.

So, you plan on doing a little shopping from your desk on the day that's unofficially been labeled Cyber Monday. Not a bad way to avoid the crowds and take a pass on the circling the mall lot looking for a place to park and the lines at the registers as you try to make purchases, but there are pitfalls, too, says Dr. Ray Klump, Lewis University's director of the master of science in information security program. If you want to be safe, Klump offers these tips: 1. Make sure your computer's operating system, antivirus and anti-spyware software, and web browsers are up-to-date. Poll: How Will You Spend Cyber Monday?

Today is one of the biggest shopping days of the year, for those with a good Internet connection. How will you spend it?

Just when you’ve recovered from Black Friday, Cyber Monday is upon us. Cyber Monday is the term given to the Monday after Thanksgiving, when people are encouraged to shop online. The term was first used six years ago, and with companies offering deals for online customers, it’s become one of the biggest shopping days of the year. How big? Well, last year, the total broke $1 billion—$1.03 billion, to be more exact. That’s up from $887 million in 2009, an increase of 16 percent. And according to this ComScore report, about half of those purchases were made from work computers.
