Kylie Schimmel raised money for Fox Chase Elementary teacher through sales of her bow shop Kylie’s Creations.
When eighth-grader Kylie Schimmel found out her brother’s fourth-grade teacher had breast cancer, she knew she wanted to do something to help. The Thompson student had a chance to do so at the Mothers and More Resale Sale earlier this month. She sold hair bows through her business, Kylie’s Creations, with part of the proceeds going to Fox Chase Elementary teacher Amber Piechowski. Kylie said she sold 89 bows, the largest amount from any sale she has ever done, and was able to donate $165 to Piechowski. “I had so many people come by to support her,” said Schimmel. “I hadn’t been expecting to get that much. I was very humbled by the turnout.” Amber Piechowski was just as surprised and said she had not even known that Kylie had been planning …

Kim Jewett's Thoughtful Thursdays program organizes a huge fleece-blanket making event at Grande Park Elementary.
When Kim Jewett created her Thoughtful Thursdays campaign, she never quite expected it to grow as much as it has. But the Plainfield resident, currently preparing to undergo radiation treatment for her second battle with breast cancer in the last three years, has started a movement that will only continue to grow and inspire. Jewett was recently named a Huffington Post Person of the Day, which is awarded to individuals who are confronting issues and making a difference in their communities. Several of the previous events that Jewett had done with Thoughtful Thursdays include volunteering at Feed My Starving Children, writing letters to service men and women and raising money for local charities. Last Thursday, Jewett hosted a fleece-…

Generally speaking, a woman in Illinois has a one in 124 chance of getting breast cancer, according to this breast cancer statistics chart from komen.org. An American woman in her 30s has a one in 232 chance of getting the disease, and a woman 20 years her senior has a one in 42 probability, according to the website. “Although we aren’t certain, the cause of breast cancer in younger women is likely caused by a genetic predisposition,” says Ann H. Partridge, M.D., M.P.H., the medical oncologist director of the Adult Survivorship Program at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. While breast cancer treatment in young women is often effective, the chance of recovery tends to be worse in women under 40. Breast tissue is…

By Elaine Gavalas | Author; Natural Health Expert, Huffington Post Blogger Standard breast cancer treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy and radiation can have severe side effects. During and after cancer treatments patients often experience persistent fatigue and sleep problems that affect quality of life. Many women may also suffer from depression, anxiety and weight loss. One in eight American women and one in 1,000 American men are battling breast cancer today. It’s estimated that more than 2 million people are diagnosed with breast cancer and fight for their lives each year. Breast cancer is difficult to face alone—for both patients and their loved ones. To help in the battle, there are a number of local resources and support groups. “Support groups are really beneficial,” says Debra Somerrs Copit, MD, Director of Breast Imaging at Albert Einstein Medical Center, and a member of the medical advisory board for Living Beyond Breast Cancer. “When patients are told they’re sick, it can be an out of body experience and they aren’t taking in everything the doctor is saying. It can be helpful to have someone to …

Kylie Schimmel will be selling the hair bows to benefit Piechowski at the annual Mothers and More Resale Sale at Long Beach Elementary on Saturday, Oct. 13.
What do hair bows and breast cancer have in common? In Oswego, they have Kylie Schimmel. Kylie, an eighth grader at Thompson Junior High, makes hair bows and clips and sells them on her Facebook website, Kylie’s Creations. The idea took root when Kylie's aunt was pregnant with a baby girl. Kylie said she made the baby a hair bow at the shower and everyone thought, “They were really cute,” said Schimmel. “And I thought, why not make a business out of this?” Kylie makes the bows out of different kinds and all colors of ribbons, and attaches them to clips, barrettes and headbands. Last year she donated part of the profits of her hair bows to supporting juvenile diabetes, which she said a friend of hers had and made her aware of the situation…
