Administration asking for final answer on whether to open Murphy Junior High School in Plainfield.
The Oswego District 308 School Board will again be asked by the administration at Monday night’s meeting to vote on the proposed 2012 opening of Murphy Junior High School. The decision on whether to open the Plainfield school has been delayed as board members and administrators study alternatives to the measure that would cost the district a minimum of $805,000 in start-up costs. Members of the committee working to redraw the district’s boundaries for next year plan to appear before the board en masse to persuade board members Murphy's opening is necessary to ease overcrowding at Bednarcik Junior High. The following is a letter sent to the District 308 board of education from the Superintendent's Boundary Committee. It was provided by the committee. Open Letter to the Oswego 308 Board of Education; We, the members of the Superintendent's District Boundaries Committee, by consensus, formally request that the action to decide whether Murphy Junior High should be opened for the 2012-2013 school year or kept closed for a determined amount of time be placed on the January 9th Board Agenda. This Committee feels that neglecting this action will delay the work we have volunteered for and place unnecessary strain on the registration process for the 308 school district. District 308 board members say opening the upcoming boundary committee meetings to the public and press will make the process much more difficult.
Oswego School District 308 board members and administrators are not happy with a recent opinion by Kendall County State’s Attorney Eric Weis that upcoming Boundary Committee meetings should be subject to the Illinois Open Meetings Act. The matter was addressed at Monday night’s board meeting during a progress report on the committee by Associate Superintendent Todd Colvin. Colvin said staff members were not pleased with Weis’ opinion, and some board members agreed. Reached by phone Tuesday, Weis said he based his opinion on case law and a similar judgment he made in 2009 regarding a district overcrowding committee.
