The floundering company never picked up the contracts for eight road projects worth $2.8 million.
Kendall County leaders awarded the final six road projects Aurora Blacktop abandoned to the second-lowest bidder Tuesday, but could make up the cost difference by pursuing the floundering company’s bid bonds. Aurora Blacktop, which is based in Montgomery, was awarded eight contracts totaling $2.8 million for roadwork in Kendall County in April, but company leaders never signed the contracts. Kendall County set a deadline for Aurora Blacktop: Pick up your eight paving contracts by June 5 or we’re going to consider giving the projects to the second-lowest bidder. On April 17, the county awarded the Montgomery company $2.8 million in contracts for eight projects – four for the county and four on behalf of area townships. About that time, Aurora Blacktop’s owners announced they would not be firing up their Yorkville asphalt plant this season and were searching for a new owner. The 65-year-old family-owned Montgomery company is in trouble, due to a sagging economy and unpaid invoices to bankrupt developers. The Leifheit brothers are working to find a buyer, but say the company's asphalt plant will not run this year.
Aurora Blacktop has been in the construction business for 65 years. Located on Sard Avenue in Montgomery, this well-respected company has remained family-owned for its entire existence. But now, due to a sagging economy and a downturn in development, Aurora Blacktop’s future is uncertain. President Rod Leifheit said Friday that the company has no plans to fire up its asphalt plant in Yorkville this season, and has struggled for years to pay its bills, due to unpaid invoices from bankrupt developers. “The developers went down, and they took us with them,” Leifheit said. Floundering? Have u people not heard of the bad economy? I wish people understood what it takes to run this kind of company! I for one am truly heartbroken for the owners & the former employees.
