The welcome video is a tradition here at Patch. Scratch that, it’s a requirement. But it’s meant to be part of a site’s launch, and mine, well, mine just wasn’t ready. It was a matter of scheduling, and of having only a couple of weeks to get ready for launch, but also, I wanted to make sure I could do something interesting. Well, interesting to me, at least. So I got a little extra time, and I got together with my friend Kevin Trudo, musician extraordinaire. And this is the goofy thing we came up with. We filmed this around town last Monday, in the bitter cold and freezing rain, and we can’t thank our StudioNow videographer and editor Diana Gurley enough for running with this, and shooting it under ridiculous conditions. I know many of …

Our weekly contest to find out what Patch readers are listening to.
This is the second of our weekly contests, which I call Listening In. It’s a chance for me to talk music with you, and find out what you’re all listening to. The rules are simple. Just send me an email with your name. I’ll draw one name per week out of a hat, and email you. If you get the email, your job is to send me the names of five random songs you’re listening to. You can do this by hitting shuffle on your iPod, or just listing off five songs. Then, I’ll feature you in the following week’s Listening In column, and give you free Patch swag. Who doesn’t like free stuff? I got a few contestants last week, but not many, and it made me think that maybe you’re worried I’ll make fun of you for your musical taste. So in the interest of full …

Editor Andre Salles announces where he'll be for six hours each week. He hopes to see you.
My good friend Paul Dailing, who runs Tinley Park Patch, pointed out that I stole the title of this column from him. He’s right, of course. Paul started his semi-regular The Editor Speaks column way back in September, and I must have liked the simple, effective name so much I nicked it. In my defense, I thought it was a standard boilerplate name, common across Patch. But no. It’s Paul’s, and I took it, and I’m ashamed. So to make it up to him, I’ve decided to steal another of his great ideas. Starting next week, I’m going to keep office hours. Now, of course, part of the thrill of being a Patch editor is that I don’t have an office. I get to work from anywhere—home, coffee shops, restaurants, Disney World. (OK, maybe not Disney World.) You…

If you’ve been reading Montgomery Patch all week, you’ve seen a lot of lists. We gave you the top places to take your kids, the best deals for the family on a budget, the hottest things to do this weekend, and the most romantic restaurants for Valentine’s Day meals. You’re probably all listed out, but just in case you’re not, we have one more for you. As much as we at Patch enjoy bringing you the news and features and columns you’ll see here every day, we want this to be an interactive experience for you. We want this to be a conversation, and we want you in on it. So here are five ways you can join in on Patch. Of course, these aren’t the only five ways—you can always comment on any of our articles, ask a question in our Q&A section, or …

Kicking off our new weekly contest, in which Patch asks you what you've been listening to.
Welcome to Listening In, the second of our weekly contests. Anyone who knows me will tell you I love music. It makes my world go round. Whenever I meet someone, the first question I want to ask is, “What music are you into?” Listening In is a way for me to do that. Essentially, I want to know what’s on your iPod, and I’m willing to pay (in fantastic Patch swag, and other prizes) to find out. Here’s how it works: 1. If you’re interested in playing this game, send me your name, hometown and email address. My address is andre.salles@patch.com. 2. Once a week, I will pull an email address out of a hat. (Seriously. I’m going to use a real hat.) 3. I will email the lucky winner mid-week and ask him or her to grab his or her iPod, hit…
If you do, there's a fabulous prize in it for you. Read on!

Hello there, and welcome to the first of our new weekly contests. It's called The Full Monty because you'll need a pretty full knowledge of Montgomery to win it. This is where we see how detail-oriented you are. Every week, I’ll post a close-up picture of a well-known place in Montgomery. If you think you know where the photo was taken, make your guesses in the comments box. (Only answers left in the comments box will count.) The winner each week will get some fancy Patch swag, which I will even hand-deliver. Hopefully, this contest will get you thinking about places you pass by every day, and seeing them in a new way. That said, this week’s is pretty easy. If you think you know the answer, well, I’m waiting to hear from you.

Editor Andre Salles runs down Montgomery Patch's lineup of regular weekly content.
Wow, what a week. Montgomery Patch launched Tuesday. That’s only three days ago but it feels like four months, and they’ve gone by in a blur. I’ve only now realized that I haven’t taken the time to say hello, and thank you all for visiting this site. So. Hello! And thank you. I’m glad you’re here. But more than that, I want you to come back. And then come back again. And after that, come back some more. So for the past few weeks, I’ve been busy putting together a lineup of regular content, things you can expect to see every week at the same time. This will be in addition to the regular news and community stories we’ll be bringing you all the time. But you never know when those are going to show up. I wanted to make sure I had regular …

In which our intrepid editor introduces himself and invites you along for the ride.
Well, hello there. Come on in, take your shoes off, get comfortable. We’re glad you’re here. If you couldn’t tell by the masthead, this is Montgomery Patch. My name is Andre, and I’ll be your editor. Some of you may know me from the five years I spent working for the Beacon-News, located just up the road in Aurora. But this is my new gig, and I’m pretty excited about it. What is Montgomery Patch? Patch is, to my mind, nothing less than the future of community news. Every day we’ll be posting new stuff to this website, news stories and features, photos and videos, all centered on Montgomery. It’ll all be here for you to read and watch and enjoy, and all for free. Yes, you read that right: It’ll all be centered on Montgomery. We’re not …
