Montgomery Kids Squeezing More Out of Summer Lemonade Stand

An $18 Foxmoor windfall has turned into a full-scale garage sale fundraiser Saturday for the Down Syndrome Buddy Walk.

On Wednesday, the neighborhood kids in the Foxmoor subdivison ran an impromptu lemonade stand. Not so noteworthy, right?

A few hours later, though, they decided to donate their $18 in proceeds and organize another, bigger, fundraiser.

The 10 kids involved are ages 6 to 10 and attend either or are starting at Kaneland Harter Middle School.

Vikki Moeller wasn’t surprised when her son and his friends asked to set up a lemonade stand. She said they do this regularly and usually earn 50 cents for their efforts. This time, Moeller utilized Facebook to encourage her community, saying “there were eager kids outside and if they had a chance to come over and buy some lemonade.”

Vikki credits the community for the success of the lemonade stand.

Blake Moeller, 9, suggested donating the earnings to the Down Syndrome Buddy Walk that he and his family participate in each year in honor of his 6-year-old sister, Cassidy. Blake said his friends readily agreed to the idea and, minutes later, were excited to try to raise more money for the cause.

They decided to organize a garage sale for this weekend.

The kids immediately went to work making signs and gathering toys. Since it is last minute, Vikki explained that the items won’t have price tags, but it will be a “reasonable offer sale” and she hopes people are generous.

Blake said his goal is “to earn a lot of money.” He later told his mom he hopes to earn $30.

Blake said he’s never done anything like this before and is “just excited.”

Vikki said she's "excited to see how it plays out" and that the garage sale is "completely run by the kids."

The Moellers have participated in the annual Buddy Walk since Cassidy was 4 months old. Vikki got emotional as she described participating in their first walk. She said 50 friends and family turned up for the event, which was a total surprise. She said they have a good turnout each year and raised $1,800 last year. This year’s fundraising goal is $1,000.

The garage sale is set for 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at 2994 Turnberry Lane, in the Foxmoor subdivision. All proceeds will support Cassidy’s Crew in the 2012 Buddy Walk, which occurs on Oct. 14 in Wheaton.
