Animal Welfare League Marks a Milestone

Local organization celebrates 65 years and adapts to changing needs.

Whenever I receive my Life Lines newsletter, it reminds me how lucky I am to have my younger dog, nicknamed The Bull, in my life.

The mailing comes from the Fox Valley Animal Welfare League (FVAWL), which is housed in the same building and works closely with Aurora Animal Control.  I became a member of FVAWL shortly after adopting The Bull in 2007.

The most recent bulletin has several items especially worthy of sharing with readers. First of all, this important organization is celebrating 65 years of helping and caring for animals. The League has three main goals as spelled out by the original founders back in 1946:

1) Get people interested in animals;

2) Promote the adoption of homeless pets; and,

3) Help stop animal abuse by getting the word out that the FVAWL would help find new homes for pets living in abusive situations.

Currently, the organization is in transition in response to the increasing need throughout the Fox Valley area. Due to the poor economy, many owners are unable to afford the spay or neuter procedure, which in turn causes an overall increase in the pet population. Sadly, many of these animals are ending up in shelters across the area and the country. To help alleviate this situation, the League plans to open a low cost spay/neuter clinic in 2012. They will also be working with various rescue groups to spay or neuter their adoptable animals at a lower cost.

Additionally, the existing office will become a much-needed pet food pantry. Please check their website (www.fvawl.org) for the Shelter Wish List to see specific items desired to take care of the many pets at the shelter. Better yet, stop in and view the available dogs and cats. You might just find your new best friend.

Want to help, but not sure you are ready to be a pet owner?  Mark your calendar.  Their next event is the FVAWL Summer Garage Sale at North Aurora Days to be held on Saturday, August 6. They are looking for donations of small household items, jewelry, sporting goods, tools, and knick knacks or just show up to shop. And, if you have some free time, volunteers are always needed throughout the year.

Other upcoming events include the Annual Walk for the Animals combined with the Paws in the Park event and the rummage sale. The League is asking us to please save larger items to donate for the rummage sale in October.

Lastly, if you are, or you know of a pet owner, struggling to feed or care for their animal, contact the FVAWL to what assistance is available.  Their number is 630-256-3640 or email fvawlinfo@gmail.com.  They are located at 600 S River Street in Aurora.

Congratulations and many thanks to the Fox Valley Animal Welfare League for 65 years of service.
