East Aurora Board Taking Applications Through Friday

The board will select two new members to replace Robb Hill, who resigned last month, and Mary Fultz, whose election was nullified by a Kane County judge.

If you’re hoping to fill one of the two vacancies on the East Aurora School Board, you still have time.

Not much time, though—the application period ends Friday, according to Board President Annette Johnson. The board will select two new members from the pool of applicants to replace Robb Hill, who , and Mary Fultz, whose election to the board in April was .

Johnson said the East Aurora board has received seven applications so far, three of them from familiar names: , , and , all of whom were candidates in the most recent school board election.

Johnson said interviews would be conducted for both open positions on Aug. 16, with a decision announced at the Sept. 6 board meeting.

Johnson said she is eager to put the last few months behind her, especially the controversy over Fultz’ election. Acting on information that Fultz was not a registered voter at the time of the election, as required by state law, the board took the case to court. Fultz did not respond to the court summons by the required date, so Judge Thomas Mueller entered a default judgment against her on July 8.

Records from both the Aurora Election Commission and the Kane County Clerk’s office show that Fultz was not registered with either agency on Election Day.

Fultz said she applied for the board for the same reason she ran for it in the first place: she wants to help the kids of the district.

"I ran to be on the board because I have the best interest of the kids at heart," she said. "Why wouldn't I want to be on the board?"

Once the new board members are in place, Johnson said, she looks forward to a busy school year. She is especially excited about a new program called Every Child Can Play, which will raise funds for students who play sports or participate in extra-curricular activities. And for the first time in seven years, she said, East Aurora will have a program for academically-gifted students.

If you are interested in applying for the East Aurora School Board, you must meet certain criteria. Applicants must be 18 years old, citizens of the United States, registered voters, and must have lived in the district for at least one year prior to the election.
