District 308 Eyes Balanced 2012 Budget

Officials said deficit reduction measures helped balance the 2012 fiscal year budget.

officials said past deficit reduction measures have helped bring forward a balanced 2012 fiscal year tentative budget.

A proposed $172.6 million operating budget was submitted to the school board Monday. The district expects to take in $189,000 more than it spends on operating expenses.

“We did some painful deficit reductions about a year and a half ago and we’re still carrying a majority of those through and that’s what’s keeping us in line,” said Tim Neubauer, assistant superintendent for business and finance.

Those cuts have included significant reduction of building-level allocations, professional development cutbacks, elimination of non-curricular field trips, reduced the number of clubs and intramural sports, curriculum renewal cutbacks, deferred building maintenance, and continued suspension of the building trades program.

Neubauer also lauded state funding which he said “came through better than we anticipated,” and the District 308 staff.

“Everybody has been, without hesitation and without complaining, really toeing the line in trying to control expenses,” he said. “They’ve done a bang-up job.”

The tentative 2012 fiscal year budget will be on public display for the public for 30 days at the Oswego Public Library, and the District Administration Center. It is also available on the district’s website.

A budget hearing and final adoption is set for 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26, at .

Wow, I would like to offer my congratulations to the ADMINISTRATION of District 308. Their commitment to our children is undeniable, they took the responsibility to refine their budgets, to do more with less and they have succeeded. This is the reason why we have the highest bond rating possible. Congratulations to Tim Neubauer and his team for balancing the budget. Our future remains uncertain, I look forward to see the first day student population numbers and this boards response to the growing numbers we face. Best wishes to the students, their teachers, the administration for a wonder-filled year of positive education. To the Board; your administration is the best in their field and your recent distrustful treatment of them speaks volumes. Their commitment to our kids and education deserve the accolades of everyone, take the lesson and learn from it.

It is commendable that the budget has $189,000 revenue excess but the budget is only a plan and often there are unexpected expenses during the year. The real proof is at the end of the year when actual expenses are compared to revenue. In the last three years when supposedly the budget was balanced borrowing was required to complete the year. Hopefully that will not happen this fiscal year. MiopicView, come out of hiding and tell us who your are. Your verbage is similar to that used by a recent public figure, so come on out. Don't be afraid!

I'd like to offer my congrats to the board. They actually publish their names and phone numbers for all to see. Their comments are a matter of public record. Their opinions are attributed to them personally, and when they offer praise or criticism, the do so without hiding behind a false name or COWARDLY drop box. Myopic View has some intelligent comments. However, they lose credence due to the fact hat the person will not step forward and identify themself. If an opinion has any validity, then why hide behind the skirts of being anonymous? It can sere no purpose tan to assist in creating problems for the administration and the board by posting such thinly veiled attacks against our society. Besides, who takes seriously the rantings of a coward anyway? Maybe it is the coward himself that is trying to assuage a lack of personal fortitude by sowing seeds of discontent, yet avoiding any responsibility for those actions. Why not sign your name? It has to be better than "Miopic View"...that moniker is neither clever nor flattering. It is a description of being narrow minded and having a restricted ability to comprehend. Next time, try to use a thesaurus when choosing a pen name.

It sounded like the administration really put tremendous effort into saving some money. However, $190,000 dollars is peanuts compared o what they have to do. Learning to live within a budget can be a difficult experience for those that have always been able to their checks covered by an obliging public. The public and the board have finally said "Enough!". Now go start showing me how you are going to be responsible... Much like the parents that took away the credit card from their teenager...
