The Power of Reading

Love to read? Pick up a good book and change someone's day!

My daughter graduated from kindergarten this week. She can't seem to get a hold of enough books. She has been to the library every other day, which puts her at about five books a day. It doesn't take her long at the library because she wants to read everything!

Not only is she reading very well, but she is reading aloud to the family. We talk about the book, what the books are about, and the moral of the story. It also opens up her imagination as to why things happened in the story and how she would do something differently. We also hear a lot of "When I grow up..."

We as adults are no different. When I read a book and find a character I love, I put myself in their shoes. I can get lost in a book for hours imagining how I would have done this or that differently. Had a bad day? Kick the shoes off and relax with that book that makes you laugh. I hear it all the time from adults how they never have time to read anymore. If you have kids, put ten minutes a day to the side to spend reading as a family; take turns reading aloud.

I've spent the past week at the hospital with my mom. At the last minute I brought a few books with me. Even though she often falls asleep, in those moments she is awake, reading to her makes her smile and and smile. For those few and far between moments, it's nice that she isn't thinking entirely of the pain she is in, and I love to see her smile.

If you're a book lover, or just like to do something nice and make someone smile, contact your local hospital, childrens hospital, nursing home or even a V.A. hospital and see if they allow volunteers to come in, read, and make someone's day!
