Dream On

When do we stop following our dreams?

When you're a parent with younger children, you'll often hear the phrase, "When I grow up I want to be..."

But you don't usually hear the same occupation two times in row. I've got one that wants to be a mommy just like me (ahh!) and the other wishes to go in the Army. Then again my daughter also wants a real unicorn and pretends to be a cat half the time...my Army guy has been saying the same thing for the past four years. Who knows?

Then I started thinking. At what age do we give up on our dreams and put them behind us? Granted, we have obligations, bills, jobs, etc. But do we have to completely give them up? Or as adults is this the time to take action? I want my kids to follow their dreams, so shouldn't I want that for myself as well?

I have two self-published books, which I have come to realize is a LOT of work. Finding an agent is nearly impossible, as they get thousands of query letters and self-published usually ends in the slush pile. I'm not saying it can't happen, but it isn't a fast process. I fight the urge to check my email every fifteen minutes just in case someone has gotten back to me. All I want is someone to give me a chance, and I'm pretty sure every other author feels the same way.
