That Most Wonderful Time of Year...

Halloween safety tips, links and resources.

It's almost here. The air takes on a certain crispness, children are full of anticipation for the upcoming events, our homes are decorated with lights and...jack-o-lanterns? That's right, Halloween is almost here!

Autumn is my favorite time of year, and I always look forward to Halloween. I probably enjoy it more than my kids. I even shop for my own costume months in advance. Sorry, folks, nobody makes a "Perry the Platypus" costume in double extra large; I checked. Halloween is just FUN. I mean, how can you not like dressing up like someone (or something) else, and going door-to-door for free candy?

However, Halloween can be a dangerous holiday for kids, adults and property. Vandalism, theft, and personal injury seem to follow this holiday like a dark shadow. As parents of trick-or-treating kids, we can often get so caught up in the fun that we forget about doing the things that can keep everyone out of trouble. The following are just a few common sense tips that can help you keep your little ghouls and goblins safe.

  • If you have little ones, this goes without saying: always accompany them while trick-or-treating, even walk them to the door. If you can't be with your kids, make sure they are with an adult, or two, that you trust. Our streets are not as safe as they used to be.
  • Explain to your children the difference between tricks and vandalism. While it may look like fun, throwing eggs at houses and cars is never cool. The cost of cleanup and the possible damages can ruin Halloween for everyone. If your kids are caught vandalizing, make sure they understand the legal consequences of their actions. Also, make them clean up the mess they've made.
  • As bad as it sounds, this is just a fact of life now. Do some internet research and check your state website for sex offenders. Go to www.isp.state.il.us/sor/  and enter your zip code to search your immediate area. This site includes current addresses. Make sure you and your kids avoid these houses!
  • If you've got kids who are old enough to go out without mom and dad, know the route they will take. Encourage them to go out with a group and make sure you know who they are with. If they have a cell phone, have them check in with you periodically.
  • Know what other activities your child may be attending; parties, school functions, etc. If they are going to a friend's house, get the phone number and make sure to meet the parents.
