Village Approves Roads to Repair This Year

Fixing up six stretches of road is estimated to cost more than $425,000, but $100,000 of that will come from a state grant.

The village of Montgomery plans to spend an estimated $425,000 on repairing and resurfacing roads throughout the village. On Monday night, trustees got to see which streets made the list this year.

Public Works Director Mike Pubentz will be able to repair more streets than he expected this year, thanks to a $100,000 grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. The grant was originally intended to help Montgomery restore the bridge over Route 30, but since the village cannot afford the remainder of the cost of that project, it was reallocated.

Trustees decided earlier this month to pump the state money into the roads program. This has allowed Pubentz to move three streets slated for 2012 repairs into this year’s list. The rest of the repairs will be paid for with motor fuel tax funds, shared by the state. These funds can only be used for road and bridge projects.

All the village streets were inspected in 2009, as part of a comprehensive maintenance program, and ranked according to greatest need of repairs. The list—called the Five-Year Rehabilitation Plan—is then used to determine which streets to repair in a given year.

Workers will also seal various cracks around the village, at an estimated cost of $2,660.

At Monday’s meeting, Trustee Pete Heinz questioned the decision to repair Scheuring Place, between Aucutt Road and Greenfield Drive, because he believes it is not as well-traveled, or in as bad a condition, as other roads in the village.

Pubentz said the roads program was designed to fix up streets before they get so bad they need to be replaced.

Trustees unanimously approved the 2011 road repair schedule. Engineer Pete Wallers said the project will be bid out later this summer. The full list of 2011 streets, with estimated costs, is reproduced below.

Scheuring Place, from Aucutt Road to Greenfield Drive $69,890 Greenfield Drive, from West End to East End $113,180 Lexington Drive, from Seasons Ridge Boulevard to Briarcliff Road $135,420 Oakland Avenue, from Jackson Street to the village limits $30,760 Talma Street, from Waubonsia Avenue to Montgomery Road $50,050 14th Street, from Kingston Avenue to Park Avenue $23,750
