Orchard Road Widening to Begin in July

State legislators unanimously approved the capital projects bill in a special session Wednesday, clearing the last hurdle from the long-gestating widening project.

The Orchard Road widening project is a go.

In a brief afternoon special session on Wednesday, state lawmakers unanimously approved a $33.2 billion capital projects bill, stripped of the controversial $430 million in additional spending tacked on by the state Senate last month.

The bill, essentially the same one passed by legislators in 2009 and struck down by state courts in January, includes funding for road and bridge projects all across the state. Most immediately for the local area, the bill will help fund the $9.3 million widening of Orchard Road to four lanes between Jericho Road and Route 30.

Plote Construction won the bid for the project, which was initially estimated at $18.5 million. Original story is .
