Oberweis Wants Car Dealers to Open on Sundays

"It is my belief that dealers should be free to choose whether they wish to be open or closed on Sundays without government interference."

By Rick Nagel

State Sen. Jim Oberweis says it's time to repeal "30-year-old special-interest legislation that prevents us from being able to buy cars on Sundays."

Oberweis, a Republican from Sugar Grove, said in a press release last week that he's introducing legislation — Senate Bill 2629 — which would allow car dealers to open on Sundays without penalty.

"It is my belief that dealers should be free to choose whether they wish to be open or closed on Sundays without government interference," Oberweis said. "In my opinion, this is a clear abuse of government power, with that power being used to protect those dealers who wish to close on Sundays from competition with those who wish to open.

"A majority of states allow automobile sales on Sundays. We should also."

Oberweis' 25th District, of course, encompasses all or some of the communities of Aurora, Bartlett, Batavia, Campton Hills, Elburn, Geneva, Montgomery, Naperville, North Aurora, Oswego, Plano, South Elgin, St. Charles, Sugar Grove, Warrenville, Wayne, West  Chicago and Yorkville.
