Barbara Argo Tapped to Return as Village Clerk

Argo, who has held the job twice before for a total of 11 years, was selected by Village President Marilyn Michelini to replace outgoing clerk Carla Cooper. If approved, Argo will serve the rest of her own term, until May 13, 2013.

Meet the new village clerk, same as the old village clerk.

Tonight, trustees will be asked to consider Village President Marilyn Michelini’s pick as the new clerk: Barbara Argo, who previously held the position for a total of 11 years.

If her nomination is approved, this will be Argo’s third go-round as clerk. She was first elected to the position in 1998, and served until 2004, when she stepped down to return to school. She ran again and was elected in 2006, but last March, when time commitments at her full-time job at Caterpillar became too great.

Michelini Carla Cooper to fill out the remainder of Argo’s term last February, but Cooper last month for the same reason–the demands of her full-time job had grown. Meanwhile, Argo was having the opposite problem—her position at Caterpillar was recently eliminated, she said.

“I decided that I would semi-retire, and I saw that they were looking for a new clerk,” she said.

If approved, Argo will serve out the rest of her own term, until May 13 of next year. If she wants to continue, she will then have to run for re-election. The village clerk job pays $6,000 a year, and duties include attending all village meetings and transcribing the minutes.

Argo said she has missed being clerk, despite how time-consuming the job is. Being clerk, she said, allows her to see and hear everything going on in village government, but without the responsibility of being a trustee.

“I enjoy it, and I’m looking forward to going back,” she said.

The Village Board will meet tonight at 7 p.m. at , 200 N. River St.
