Suspect in Custody After Montgomery Carjacking [UPDATED]

An unidentified male suspect was taken into custody after allegedly crashing a stolen car into a gas pump in Oswego Friday night — then getting into a physical fight with a bystander after forcing another driver out of a vehicle, police said.

Capt. Jeff Burgner said that at around 6:42 p.m., Oswego police got a call to assist Montgomery police with a vehicular hijacking at Route 30 and Douglas Road.

While en route to the reported carjacking, police received a call about a fight in progress at the Shell gas station/Circle K, 1190 Route 34 in Oswego.

According to police, after crashing the vehicle into a gas pump, the unidentified suspect approached a car in the gas station parking lot and pounded on the window. He then approached another vehicle, removed the driver and got into the vehicle, police said. 

The fight began when a bystander came to the driver's aid, according to Burgner.

Burgner stopped short of saying the suspect was attempting to steal the second vehicle. 

"We don't know what the intent was, but one could surmise," he said.

Burgner said that when police arrived, the bystander and the suspect were engaged in a physical altercation. Police were able to apprehend the suspect without incident, he said.

The man was then turned over to Montgomery police. No injuries were reported in the incident, Burgner said.

Montgomery police did not immediately return a message from Patch on Friday night.
