Officer Released from Hospital; Bond Set at $250K for Oswego Man

A Montgomery police patrol sergeant is home after being struck by a car early Saturday.

Sgt. Adam Kuncl suffered a skull fracture, which required stitches to his head, along with a broken scapula, compressed discs in his back and multiple lacerations and bruises to his head, face and body, according to Police Chief Daniel Meyers. Kuncl was released from Rush-Copley Medical Center on Sunday.

The Oswego teenager accused of hitting Kuncl while driving drunk, Kendall J. Collier, was reportedly fleeing a party in the 700 block of Oakton Road where police had received a report of shots fired.

Kuncl was responding to the report of gunshots when he was struck by Collier’s 1998 Chevy Malibu, according to Meyers.

Bond was set at $250,000 for Collier Sunday in Kane County Court. The teenager, of the 100 block of Linden in Oswego, was also reportedly injured in the crash when his head struck the steering wheel.

Collier, who is charged with aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol, was treated at Provena Mercy Medical Center in Aurora and released, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Meyers told the Tribune that police found the .45-caliber handgun believed to be used in the shooting, which occurred during a party on Oakton Road. The gun was recovered from a black Dodge pickup truck spotted at the scene of the incident.

On Saturday, Aurora police said officers stopped a black pickup truck matching the description of the one involved in the shooting at Melrose Avenue and Lafayette Street.

Aurora police spokesman Dan Ferrelli said the two occupants, an 18-year-old woman and 22-year-old man, were arrested without incident and turned over to Montgomery police, who released them without charges.

The truck was also turned over to Montgomery police for investigation, Ferrelli said.

In a press release, Meyers thanked the community for the outpouring of support for Kuncl.

"Sgt. Kuncl and his family wanted to express their sincere appreciation for all the support and well wishes they have received," Meyers said. “... On behalf of Sgt. Kuncl, his family, and the Montgomery Police Department, we sincerely want to thank all the emergency personnel, medical staff, assisting agencies, officers, and by-standers who came together and assisted us in our time of need."
