Montgomery Cops Hit the Roof for Special Olympics

Police were at (and atop) Dunkin' Donuts on Douglas Road from 5 a.m. until 2 p.m. Friday collecting donations.

Yes, there was a man with a gun on the roof of on Douglas Road this morning. But don’t worry, he was supposed to be there. And he was there for a good cause.

participated in Cops on Top this morning, a statewide event to raise money for the Special Olympics. Those who stopped by 1601 Douglas Road before 2 p.m. today and donated got a coupon for a free donut. Donations of $10 or more brought prizes, like travel mugs filled with coffee, or t-shirts.

Also, they got to witness the strange sight of one of their village police officers hanging out on a rooftop. Visitors who dropped by earlier Friday morning saw Sgt. Adam Kuncl, and later drop-ins saw Officer Robert Kaleta waving to customers from atop the Dunkin' Donuts sign.

This is the third fundraiser Montgomery police have organized for the Special Olympics this year, after the and events in March. Officer Ashley Mauer is the driving force behind these events, and she was on hand Friday morning, collecting donations and handing out coupons.

The Special Olympics, she said, is a passion of hers.

“It gives adults and children with special needs something to look forward to,” she said. “Watching the enjoyment on their faces makes it worth it for me.”

These fundraisers are all leading up to the big one—the Law Enforcement Torch Run, scheduled for June 5 in Elgin. Last year, police departments around the state collected more than $2.9 million for the Special Olympics, and Mauer hopes they’ll crush that record this year.

Last year’s Cops on Top event pulled in $1,800, and according to Montgomery Police Administrative Assistant Kathy Priegel, they raised $1,383 at Friday's donation drive.

Police still have several items for sale to help the Special Olympics, including t-shirts, hats and travel mugs, and will sell them at the vilage's Saturday morning from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the police station on Civic Center Drive. All proceeds will go to the Special Olympics.
