Kendall County Sheriff Looks Into Firearm Death of Child

Deputy's service weapon involved in shooting death of 11-year-old boy. Sheriff offers prayers and calls it a "terrible tragedy."

As Yorkville Police investigate the firearm-related death of an 11-year-old boy who was found dead on Jan. 28 in his home, the sheriff's department has begun its own review.

The child died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The boy's mother is a Kendall County sheriff's deputy and her service weapon was used in the shooting. At this time, it's not known whether the shooting was accidental or intentional.

Sheriff Richard Randall issued a statement Wednesday saying the department would look into whether policies regarding the locking, storage and handling of firearms had been followed.

“This is a terrible tragedy, made all the more difficult by the victim’s young age,” Randall said in his statement. “Our prayers go out to our deputy and her family."
