Driver in Tuesday Night Crash Seriously Injured

Hospital officials won't confirm the condition of 16-year-old girl driving the minivan involved in Tuesday's crash with a semi truck on Orchard Road, but Montgomery police say she is in critical condition.

A 16-year-old girl was seriously injured in a crash with a semi truck on Orchard Road and Route 30 Tuesday night, Montgomery police said.

The girl remains at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, and police said she is in critical condition. Hospital officials would not confirm her condition.

The girl was driving a 1994 Chevrolet Astrovan north on Orchard Road around 8:20 p.m. when a semi-truck owned by ABF Freight System Inc. of Aurora turned left from the southbound lane, striking the minivan head on, police said.

A Lifestar helicopter landed on Orchard Road and took the girl to Good Samaritan, police said.

Two passengers in the van—Sharon Vanetten, 38, of Big Rock, and a 13-year-old—were taken to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora, where they were treated for minor injuries and released, police said.

A fourth person involved in the accident refused medical treatment at the scene, according to Oswego Fire Department Battalion Chief Jeff Warren.

The family pet, a black and brown German shepherd, ran from inside the van after the crash, and has not been located yet, police said.

The intersection remained closed well past midnight, while the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team investigated. Montgomery police were assisted by Oswego Fire, the Kane County Office of Emergency Management, the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, and the reconstruction team.

No citations have been issued. The accident remains under investigation, and anyone with information is asked to call the investigations tip line at 630-879-8707 ext. 3300.
