Aurora Man Dies After Small Plane Crash Sunday in SW Kane County

John Morrison, 73, was the sole occupant and died at the scene. He was reportedly flying a small experimental plane, according to the Kane County Sheriff's Office.

A 73-year-old Aurora man is dead after the plane he was flying crashed Sunday morning in southwestern Kane County.

John Morrison was the sole occupant of the plane and died at the crash scene, a cornfield south of Granart Road west of Camp Dean Road in Big Rock Township.

Kane County Sheriff's deputies and Forest Preserve officers responded to the crash at about 7:48 a.m. Sunday, according to a press release.

Morrison on Sunday was flying a small experimental plane and had just taken off from Aurora Airport, according to an initial investigation. For an unknown reason the plane began to lose altitude as it headed north across Route 30 and crashed in the cornfield south of Granart Road.

The flight appears to be the first for the experimental aircraft, according to the release. Morrison is an experienced pilot and has a long history of flying experimental planes.

The Federal Aviation Administration continues to investigate the cause of the crash.
