A Montgomery Man is Convicted of Multiple Weapons Charges, Third Time
A 25-year-old with a history of weapons offenses faces up to 30 years in prison.
Jerry A. Burton faces six to 30 years in prison after a judge found him guilty of several felony weapons charges.
Burton, 25, who has a history of weapons offenses, waived his right to a trial. Associate Judge Allen M. Anderson convicted Burton of one count of armed habitual criminal, a Class X felony, one count of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, a Class 2 felony, and unlawful use of a weapon, a Class 3 felony.
This marked his third weapons conviction.

stopped a red minivan driven by Burton after he failed to stop at a red light on Douglas Road around 4:50 a.m. Oct. 25, 2009.
Police determined Burton was driving on a revoked license. He was arrested and his car searched. Police discovered a loaded sawed-off Winchester 120 12-gauge shotgun during the search, according to a press release.

“Illinois’ laws clearly prohibit a convicted felon from possessing a firearm, not to mention a sawed-off shotgun in a vehicle with several passengers at 5 a.m. My thanks to the Montgomery police for taking steps to remove a career criminal from the streets,” Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said in a press release.
Burton was convicted in 2005 of unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon in 2003. He committed and was convicted of unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon later in 2005. These convictions allowed Burton to be charged with the crime of armed habitual criminal.
Burton of the1-99 block of Crestwood Court, had been free on bond — which was revoked Friday after the conviction. He was taken into custody.
Burton is scheduled for a sentencing hearing at 11 a.m. June 23.
