Windows 8 is Everywhere and Nowhere

Should you upgrade to Windows 8? Greg Nelson says you can hold on until you need a new computer.

Microsoft is bringing forth the next generation of Windows with the 2012 (or late 2011) release of Windows 8.

The next release, in my opinion, is really more of a major upgrade from Windows 7 then a new operating system. Yes, they are adding new features, and even more so fixing/enhancing the ones in Windows 7 that were okay but just a little off in speed or fit and finish.

The big stuff is support for ARM-based processors, which are used in tablets and phones. This should get the Droid world moving to lower pricing and more innovation. Also, the Ribbon interface that came out with office 2007 is everywhere now, which will make the OS and Applications more seamless in use. You’ll also see things like HTML5 and a new browser sandwiched into the OS along with a new App Store, like you get with your iPhone and Droid phones.

So are you saying, “You should run out the door and wait in a line at Best Buy?”  Nope. I’m saying you should wait until you need a new computer before making that leap, maybe.

Let us face the facts, people: if it’s working for you now then why upgrade? Heck, Windows XP is still in over 50% of all computers. I, for one, will wait for the dust to settle before jumping on the Windows 8 upgrade bandwagon. If our friends at Microsoft make a cheap upgrade path like Apple does at $30.00, maybe I will consider it. Or even at $49.00, maybe. But they never do, which is why so many just simply wait and buy a new PC. I wish someone at Microsoft would wake up and smell the coffee. They already spent the money on development, why not make it happen for those of us really wanting the upgrade.

On to wish the dreams and headaches of doing an upgrade. Will it work the first time, will it eat my data? Oh wait, I’ll wait for a new computer purchase – can anyone say, where is the darn Sunday advertisements?
