TV Waves in Your Computer

Need a new TV? Here's how your computer can pull double duty, for less money.

Some time ago, I decided to make my computer more then just a place to blog and work. It was to become my media center on the desk where my bottom sits for 10 hours every day, and sometimes on the weekends writing software.

It started with watching MSNBC on the internet and Comcast news feeds, but like all true geeks I wanted more. So I ventured into HDTV on my computer with the help of a USB HDTV device.

This handy little unit turned a window (or full window) into local HDTV stations with a little install of software (Avermedia USB Volar) and the USB device plugged in and connected to a HDTV local Radio Shack antenna. So now I have local TV in full HD to keep me happy for a huge cost of 75$ total. For many needing the extra TV, this could be a solution, and at about 50% of the cost of a new LCD TV.

Okay now onto news. Where does this guy get all his news from? Well, I get over 30 news feeds a day for my industry, tech and general news feeds, either with RSS or direct email. What are some of my favs?

ZDNET = Tech

InformationWeek = Tech and others. They have great daily feeds.

MSNBC = News

WGNTv = Local news

The Internet is great place to get local news, like Patch, and if you dig you can find almost anything. Stay on top of the world because it changes all too fast!

Hey readers, got any ideas or topics you would like covered? Got a computer question for your local geek? Email them into your local Patch editor and he will forward them into the giant geek mailbox, for either me or one of my staff to answer. (Yes, I have a staff: five employees keeping the Grocery world safe in the deli and meat departments.) Keep that Patch dial on the same geek station and same geek time.
