Cool Application of the Week: Open Office

Every week I'll link to a cool application that will make your tech life easier. I call it CAW (Cool Application of the Week).

Let's talk CAW and Office software. OK, so you have Office from Microsoft or something like that, installed on one computer. Well, how about something free that does the job for those other computers in the house.

On my kids' computers, I have them use Open Office:  http://www.openoffice.org.

This wonderful, full-featured applcation does 99 percent of what Office does, and well, it's free for Linux, Mac and Windows-based systems. Many in the geek world have used or use it daily, but others have not ventured into the realm in fear of using something not supported. Well, all I can say is, try it and see what the geeks have known for years. (It works!)

OK, so the office is covered, how about let's talk Skype. I think back to the days when "chat" was typing on AOL, and other quick short cuts in geek-speak transformed the internet playing field. Well, now we pickup our headsets and talk (not type) for free: http://www.skype.com

Need a way to chat to those grandkids in another state? You know they are tech savy and Skype can bridge those phone calls. Heck you can even add a video (webcam) and see them for free.

Ok that's it for CAW this week.....stay tuned next week!
