DIY Remodeling Doesn't Have To Be Overwhelming

One of the biggest hurdles in a remodeling project is getting started. The reason, many times, is because when you look at a large remodeling project you are overwhelmed with where to start, things will be disrupted, you will have construction dust and mess and many other details.  Finally you just bite the bullet and jump in feeling frustrated and wanting to just get it over with.

What if you looked at the process differently than you have before? Rather than looking at the whole room needing remodeling, focus on one thing at a time. Sit in a chair in the middle of the room you want to make changes to, you’re sitting because that will be how you experience most of your rooms, stand in an entryway or even lay down in a bedroom, however you experience that room.

First, make a list of everything that bothers you on that wall, turn and do the same with the next wall and so on. You’re going to be looking at this for long time, you want it to be right, don’t rush.

Second, arrange the list in order from the ceiling down so it looks something like this:

1.       Fix cracked drywall on soffit

2.       Change the light over the table

3.       Paint

4.       New handles on drawers and doors

5.       Install tile backsplash

6.       New countertop

This looks very different than “remodel the kitchen” doesn’t it?

Third, here’s the new way of looking at it, each of these numbered projects are the whole project not a whole room full of projects, just that one item on the list. Instead of tearing up everything at once just do one project at a time, start to finish, including clean up.

This new way of looking at home improvement projects does two things, 1. Makes you feel in control of your remodeling by having smaller, manageable projects and 2. Helps you get started painlessly because now you have a plan that makes the project easier on you and your budget.
