The Lawrence Welk Era

Hear accordionist Howard Manthei play popular Welk tunes and learn about the history of Lawrence Welk's climb to fame.

On January 10, 2016 at 2:00 pm the Chapel on the Green in Yorkville is pleased to present a program which traces the history of Maestro Lawrence Welk from his North Dakota farm roots to his long running television program.

Accordionist Howard Manthei was inspired by Welk’s tv program when he started accordion lessons in 1956. You’ll learn about Welk’s career through a collection of historic photos and stories, and hear Howard play Welk accordion hits including Calcutta and the Baby Elephant Walk, and many more.

You’ll also learn about Lawrence Welk’s long Chicago engagements, the raising of his family in River Forest, and the transition to California where his television career got a start. Howard relates stories about personalities such as the Lennon Sisters and Myron Floren--and you’ll hear Howard play the song that landed Myron’s job with the Welk organization in 1955.

Over the years Howard has played at area nursing homes and various community events. This benefit program is FREE, but donations towards the Chapel’s preservation efforts are appreciated. For information call 630.553.6287. The Chapel is located at 107 W. Center Street.
