Community Corner

National Mentoring Month

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern
Kane & Kendall counties has served our community and its’ children and
youth for 30 years. Children in our
program have benefited from over 11,000 hours of mentoring in the last year
alone. Our one-to-one comprehensive mentoring program is provided free of
charge through the generous support of organizations such as the United Way, countless
local businesses, and those of you who so generously support our work. We would
like to say thank you to every organization, business, family, and individual
who has supported our mission over the years. Together we have impacted and
changed countless lives over the last 30
years.

January is National Mentoring
Month and provides our community a tremendous opportunity to focus on providing a mentor to every
single child who needs and wants one. A caring volunteer who will provide them with
much needed attention, direction, support, and encouragement. We hope you will
consider partnering with us as a volunteer mentor, a business partner, or a
financial supporter.

In 2014 we will cross paths with
more and more children who are facing adversity, and therefore face the future
with great uncertainty. With your help a child can begin to see life through a
new set of lenses, learn new life skills, and focus on the importance of their
education, opening their eyes to a world of new possibilities and a brighter
future.

The impact of an individual
deciding to become a mentor or a local business choosing to partner with us, providing
financial support, mentors, or both is remarkable. Over and over again, we hear
and see the stories of people who give of themselves and make a significant
difference in the life of a child.

Should you consider the
possibility of becoming a volunteer mentor or supporting our program in some
other way, you can be confident our program is efficient and effective. Statistics and independent research demonstrate our
mentoring programs work. Not only do the children in our programs get along
better with their peers and family members, the children in our programs are:

Ø
52% less likely to
skip school

Ø
46% less likely to
begin using illegal drugs

Ø
33% less likely to engage
in violent behavior

Ø
27% less likely to
skip school, and

Ø
80% of the children we
serve show academic improvement in math and language arts

As we begin a new year, our
purpose remains the same; to help at-risk children reach their full potential
through life-changing, professionally supported, one-to-one mentoring
relationships. Our vision is clear; to provide a mentor for every single child
who needs and wants one. And our focus is sharp; to serve children with
compassion and excellence, never giving up on our dream to change the lives of
the children we serve.

We hope you will consider joining
