New testing center for GED and other certification tests

Grundy-Kendall Regional Office of Education (GKROE) has opened a Professional Training and Testing Center which will host the new 2014 GED test and many other certification tests. The site is located in the lower level of the Kendall County Historic Courthouse at 109 W. Ridge Street, Yorkville.

Pearson VUE, a company that has over 5100 test centers world-wide, was selected to implement the 2014 computer-based GED test in Illinois. GKROE is an authorized testing center for Pearson VUE, having created a computer lab that met numerous requirements including security and accessibility specifications.

GKROE’s testing center will be able to host many educational and professional certification tests including the Test for Academic Proficiency (TAP) which is required by teachers in Illinois. More information about which tests are available can be obtained at http://pearsonvue.com.

Effective January 2, 2014, the GED test will only be available in a computer-based test and the cost will rise from $50 to $130. The 2014 computer-based GED test will eliminate the current pencil and paper test and will require some basic computer knowledge. The 2014 test will be more rigorous and aligned with Common Core Standards, a set of uniform educational standards now adopted by Illinois and almost every other state.

The 2013 GED test had sections of mathematics, language arts, science, social studies, and an essay; the 2014 GED test eliminates the essay; however, essays have been incorporated into the other sections. In 2014 test takers can earn a “GED with Honors” or a normal GED.

Christopher Mehochko, Regional Superintendent, urges current GED students who have already passed parts of the GED test to pass the other parts before the end of 2013. December 21 is the deadline to pass the 2013 GED or else their scores will be erased; they will then have to pay for and take the entire 2014 computer-based test.

“Our office has scheduled many GED test dates in November and December to accommodate current GED students,” says Mehochko. “I want to encourage them to get their GED in 2013 and beat this deadline.”
