Montgomery Sam's Club Proposal Nearing a Vote

Warehouse chain in negotiations to locate in Ogden Hill retail development.

Montgomery could be home to a Sam’s Club warehouse store as early as next fall if the Village Board approves the development at its next meeting.

The store will be located on the western edge of the Ogden Hill retail development that also houses JC Penny and Menards, according to village documents. The village’s Plan Commission approved several variance recommendations this week.

The Village Board’s Committee of the Whole will hear those plans and their variances at its meeting set for Tuesday.  The development is likely to come before the Village Board for a vote Feb. 25.

Plans for the store also include a tire center and gas station. The store is projected to bring in as much as $750,000 per year in sales tax to the village, and will mean about 170 new jobs, according to acting Village Manager Jeff Zoephel.

Zoephel also said the village is in negotiations with Sam’s regarding an economic incentive package that could involve sales tax rebates back to the company.

“Nothing has been decided on that yet,” Zoephel said.

Charlene Coulombe-Fiore, executive director of the Montgomery Economic Development Corp., called the proposal a big win for the entire area, including several other local taxing bodies that will benefit from additional tax dollars.

“This has been in the works for over a year,” Coulombe-Fiore said. “I know that Aurora, North Aurora and Oswego all were going after this development. I’m glad they are coming here.”
