Editor's note: The following is a press release from the village of Montgomery.
Some businesses fail in the first six months. Some succeed and serve their communities for years. Then there is Lyon Workspace Products, .
Lyon Workspace Products, formerly Lyon Metallic and then Lyon Metal, began as a manufacturer of sheet metal products in 1901. Now, Lyon is the “leading manufacturer and supplier of top quality lockers, industrial storage and workspace products,” according to its website.
A Business Bonding meeting between Lyon and the Village of Montgomery in June revealed that Lyon’s Montgomery branch has employed as many as 400 employees at one time and its total building space is more than 700,000 square feet.
“We’ve had a lot of success at this location,” said Margaret Ciszewski, human resources vice president at Lyon.
Lyon has contributed more than just jobs and products to Montgomery, though. Lyon was an important manufacturer of wartime materials during both world wars. These items included ammunition racks, footlockers and mobile repair shops.
Women were recruited to work in place of the men at Lyon when the males were drafted, marking the first time females were a significant part of the manufacturing workforce.
Lyon’s continued innovation and success has allowed for expansion to other parts of the country. There are Lyon distribution centers now not just in Montgomery, but in Dallas, Los Angeles and Philadelphia. Montgomery remains the headquarters for Lyon Workspace Products.
Lyon’s website reveals that the company’s merchandise catalog has evolved from a sheet metal manufacturer into a supplier of “storage solutions” for industrial and home use. While Lyon’s business model has become more complex, its place in Montgomery is as vital as ever.
“We’re glad to be a part of this community,” Ciszewski said.
