More than 4,000 participants and spectators from around the country are expected to attend the Amateur Athletic Union’s 2012 National Karate Championships currently being held at .
Opening ceremonies were held Wednesday and competition commenced later that day.
The event is estimated to bring 1,200 guest rooms to Pheasant Run Resort and an additional 2,000 spectators over the four day event for a minimum direct spending impact of nearly $700,000.
“We are delighted the AAU has selected St. Charles for this signature event which points once again to the appeal St. Charles holds for sporting events, meetings and conventions, and leisure visitors” said Amy Egolf, Executive Director, Greater St. Charles Convention and Visitors Bureau.
The Greater St. Charles Convention & Visitors Bureau is providing complimentary support services to the AAU Karate Nationals, one of many events for which the Bureau provides services each year. The mission of the Greater St. Charles CVB is to promote the City of St. Charles, the Villages of Elburn and Campton Hills and Campton and St. Charles Townships as a destination for leisure visitors, meetings, conventions, motor-coach groups, and sports events. The CVB is funded by the Illinois Office of Tourism and a portion of the hotel/motel tax collected by St. Charles hotels. Tickets will be available at Pheasant Run Resort from July 4-7. A daily pass is $15 and an all-event pass is $40. Youth five and under are free. The competition starts at 8:00am each day.
