135 People Participate in Weekend Fundraiser

Workout for the Cure raises about $5,000.

A few years ago, the staff at the Joliet Park District got together to raise money and to honor one of their own. When Joliet Park District employee Kris Toborg was diagnosed with cancer, they began the Workout for the Cure. It became a yearly event.

On Oct. 13, the event was moved indoors because of the inclement weather, but Gina Giarrante-Rodriguez, Fitness Coordinator, said it was a good choice.

"I think moving it indoors was one of the best things we could have done," she said.

Even if there was not rain, the morning was going to be cold, so the fitness fundraiser indoors made participants more comfortable.

Participants in Workout for the Cure could choose to participate in Zumba or in intensity fitness. For $30 for members or $35 for non-members, particpants took Zumba for three hours with a couple breaks or intensity fitness for an hour and a half with no breaks.

"There were more first-timers in both classes than I expected," Giarrante-Rodriguez said.

Didn't make it to the event, but want to help out? Head over to Provena Saint Joseph Inwood Athletic Center and buy a ribbon for $1 or a Workout for the Cure hoodie for a $20 donation. For more information, call Giarrante-Rodriguez at 815-741-7275, Ext. 162.
